My power window does not work. The motor runs but the window just makes a clunk sound and does not move. Should I just take it to my mechanic or (and I have downloaded the repair manual) try to fix it myself? Taking off the door panel looks easy enough but I do not want to take it off to have things fall on the ground and spend the rest of my Sunday trying to fix the mess.

Thanks
Beth

If you can remove the switch from the door panel/arm rest, give it a good spray with electrical contact cleaner. You will need to make sure you disconnect the wires first, for safety. Flip the switch back and forth after the stray and let it dry out. Should take a couple minutes. Reconnect and see if it works.
You may also be able tyo spray the switch directly and work it in.
Permatex 24378 Non-Flammable Electrical Contact Cleaner works really well.

Probably the window regulator since you can hear the motor run..you may have to buy motor and regulator,it can be a pia,but if you are mechanically inclined you may want to try it--good luck in any case--Regards Butch PS: if anything falls out it is broken anyway---and be sure to tape the window to the door frame before trying to take anything out--

Thanks. I think the window is off the scissor track thing that moves the window up/down. I tried to lower the window when it was frozen do to the weather and that's when it stopped working.

The OP is right. The door switch assemblies just pop right out with a little prying straight up with fingers and unpluggining the connectors. You could try swapping the two to see if there is any difference in action.
Removing the panels is a slight pain..
The screws are easy to find and remove. Lift up gently on the panel (to small plastic guide tabs at the bottom easily broken). Find a five gallon bucket to rest the panel on. The are white plastic rod keepers for the lock that might pop(break). The ones closest to the edge of the door did on mine. It was the first time I removed the panel and didn't know to support the weight to see what was going on (52 yo female on the DIY kick). The assembly in mine was thankfully a metal scissor style instead of the wire wound. My drivers window severly stuttered. There was a small bolt I loosened to relieve it, but never 100 percent fixed.

If the switch still functions both up and down, you can pretty much eliminate that.

Pop the door panel off and get in there, if you see broken parts, then purchase a placement unit.....replacing a windows mechanism isn't hard.

more then likely there is a stripped gear, be it the drive gear or possibly a pivot.....I have seen all different kind.....Toyota is the worst.

there will be a couple screws (bolts) holding the glass to the mechanism, pull the glass carefully.
Then pull out everything else...it should only be a couple bolts, then you will have to maneuver it in order to get it out.

That sounds to be the problem, shouldn't be to hard to fix.I have a 2002 Dakota but mine has manual windows.

I don't have experience with Dodges, but I swapped the motor and regulator several times on a chevy and it took very little time and no special tools. Just some small sockets and wrenches. If it is off the tracks or something wrong with the regulator you should be able to fix it yourself in under an hour, parts are available at NAPA or other parts stores.

Thanks all!!!! The window was off the track.
