HELP: where to get steel in Toronto?

Hey all,

I'm thinking of trying my hand at forging some Japanese style blades, but thus far I haven't been able to find anywhere in Toronto and area that sells a suitable steel like (10xx series , namely 1060 and up) or W2 or other sword steels that can clay temper in the size, amount, or dimensions I need ( flat bar - 3/8"x 1" x 30"+ or 1" round). If anyone knows anywhere that would be of great help, as I don't really want to order in from the states , considering the shipping alone costs more than the steel I'm trying to get :(.

check your phone directory for an automotive "spring and brake" shop. They often have scraps or are willing to cut to order. down here I know of a few that stock 4140, 5160, and 10X5
 
wrecking yard, find some 1 ton truck leaf springs. costs about $10 for an lifetime supply

It's possible, but when he asked for a 10xx or W2 Japanese type, I assume that he intends to Hamon it.

Truck leaf springs may be highly alloyed with Mg, like a 5160, which won't hamon for him.

As I mentioned before , I was looking for places around Toronto for finding steel haha, I checked them , the thickest stock they have seems to be quarter inch.

You're right, I'm planning on putting a hamon on it , so I'll need something that isn't deep hardening like 5160 and the like.
 
I would call one of the larger spring shops that serve the truck industry and ask them where they purchase stock to make new springs.

There used to be a supplier that sold exclusively to spring shops about 30 years ago but I cannot remember the suppliers name.

Another possibility is to call Dean Piesner in the St Jacob's area to find out where he gets his steel.
