Thanks to all of you knife-nuts on this forum I've pretty much made up my mind to skip the Benchmade 940 I've been eyeing and go straight for the large Sebenza... but which one should I get? I know this shouldn't be difficult, but should I go for a decent deal on a new-in-box Plain Sebenza or a used Pheasant Tail CGG Sebenza for about $30 more (a few small scratches, recently factory sharpened)?

Is the polished handle less grippy than the plain one? Am I crazy to spend this much on a single knife? Is a large Sebenza to big for a daily carry?

I'm partial to the small, much more useful size

Are you crazy for spending that much?

Well, are you married?

If you are the answer is obvious!!

Didn't stop me though...

:p :p :p

The answers will obviously vary from person to person, but I'll give you mine. :)

I would recommend getting a decorated Sebenza over a plain (assuming you like the graphic). The anodized designs add a lot of personality and eliminate any vestige of the "grey turd". If your used Sebenza is more scratched up than you like CRK will recondition it for a nominal fee.

I started out with a plain Large Sebenza then had CRK replace one sideplate with an anodized "trailing moon" graphic and polish the blade. I have not found that the change affects my grip at all.

You may be crazy to spend that much money on a single knife, but you'll have plenty of company. ;) I don't really feel the "magic" the way some people seem to. I do think my Sebenza is probably the toughest folder I own. And I think that CRK's exceptional customer service justifies at least some of that price difference.

I carry my Large Sebenza much of the time. It is smaller and lighter than several other knives that I have carried regularly (Sifu, LCC).

I love the large Sebbie and I find that it carries very well in the waistband. I'd definately take the decorated one if you like the design. I've got a plain and I love it but I'm planning to eventually either have the side plate replaced with a decorated one or most likely what I'll do is save up for a Woodie.

Thanks for the replies so far...I'll probably go ahead and get the decorated 'benz.

Am I married? Hell no! I'm probably a lot younger than most of you other forumites -- I'm 18 and heading off to Duke in about a month from now. I need a good folder because I'm going on a 2-week backpacking trip before I start school. I bought an all-black Gerber AR 3.00, but I want a REAL knife -- I'll probably end up exchanging it for a Spyderco sharpmaker or something. When I was researching knives I realized that I was a latent knife-nut, and after reading all of the rave reviews of the Sebenza I decided I had to have one for myself.

Monkeyxx, at least you are not going to UNC!!!

I cant bash duke too much as my sister went there.

your fellow ACC alum (WFU)

I compared a large Sebenza, BM750 Pinnacle & CRKT S-2 at a local B&M store.

I MUCH preferred the BM750, so I bought one and carried it for a month or so. I decided it was too large for my EDC, so I bought a small Sebenza. If they'd offered a small Pinnacle, I'd have bought that instead.

I _love_ my small Sebenza as an EDC. So much so, that I gave my BM750 to a friend.

I recently started rotating between my Kershaw Boa, blue-handled 940 & Sebenza. I'm liking that, but I tend to think if I had a CGG small Sebenza, it would be no-contest (I'd stop rotating). They look a LOT nicer than the plain.

I absolutely love my small plain Sebenza. It is just the right size for EDC and will do whatever cutting chores I need done. I also am extremely impressed with the quality. I would personally like a gold coin model - I'm not terribly enamored of most of the CG models I have seen. I actually e-mail CRK and asked if a gold coin could be put in a Sebenza as an after-market deal, and they said no problem. Great people to deal with. I don't regret the money spent on such a fine knife. I plan on passing it down to my son one day. :)

What would something like that cost?

I'm surprised there isn't a bunch of after-market add-ons like that for the Sebenza.

I would vote for the large model. I carry my large woody day in and day out. The small may be more acceptable in some circles and if so you won't go wrong with it either. Would have to go with a decorated model if possible, a unique would be my first choice, after wood of course.

Sorry to hear about your not be able to go to Chapel Hill "GO HEELS", and having to settle for Dookey instead. Oh well, at least you will get to see the Tarheels when they come over to kick some dookey butt! LOL!

You either love the 'Heels or you hate them, ain't no middle ground! Just check out my forum name!

You've got to start off with a large plain ~ in a classic mode.

Don't get one with all of that frilly stuff. . . ;) ya get one of those and you won't want to use it except cut string and tape and loose threads ! Either that or it'll end up in a sock drawer.

Once you get yourself a "large plain ~ in a classic mode" you need to obtain a small plain ~ in a classic mode.

Then. . .and only then. . .can you get yourself one of the frilly one !

:D

I Like the large maybe it's like you get more for your money. There is nothing that a small knife can do, that a bigger one wouldn't do even better.

I went for large classic Sebenza, and don't reget the decision one bit. I really like the pointy tip on the classic. The pointy tip makes for a very versatile blade on the large model.

Personally, I'd go large. The small has a lot of good competition right now, at a much lower price point. The rewards show most when you go large. Also, the large isn't exceptionally large. People take much less notice of my large Seb than something like my Spyderco Military or Buck110.

I decided not to go with the graphic on my Seb. I figure that I can have a graphic added on later, and the handle polished. It makes sense to make sure that the Sebenza is for you before you go with all of the add-ons. Also, if you get the handle all scratched up on your hiking trip, you can have the extras added on afterwards, and you get a knife that looks like brand new also.

You made a good choice going with a Sebenza. I can't think of a folder I'd trust more for two weeks in the wilderness.

Hey, the guy is going to Duke obviously because he is a man of style, class and intelligence. However if he ever receives a sharp blow to the head and looses any or all of these traits its good to know that a school like UNC is close by for him to go to. ;)

Sue me. I grew up a poor ECU fan in Greenville. Its my duty to take shots at UNC when I can. (The cowards wouldn't even play us until recently.):D

I would also recommend getting a CGG Sebenza over a plain. The anodized designs look awesome. Try to catch one on the "For Sale" forums.

This knife begs to be used so, if you were worried about using the knife don't.... CRK will recondition the knife for a small fee after it get's some character marks.

Good Luck and GO TIGERS :p

Oh no. I smell those abc fans out there! Come on.......you know you want to be a TarHeel. Deep down inside, you know it! LOL!

Well, at least we can agree on the Sebenza being the best out there! Why it ranks no. 1, right up there with the 'Heels!

Once again, thanks for all of your lucid responces. I've decided to go with the large Pheasant Tail Sebenza. I still feel a little crazy spending this much (I could get, what, 10 Buck 110s?), but I'm sure that will pass.

About UNC: I love the Tarheels too -- this was another one of the colleges I was accepted to. I applied out of state however (and forgot to apply for financial aid), so in the long run it might actually be CHEAPER to go to Duke (plus I like the school more :)). I haven't actually spent more than a few days there yet, so you'll have to wait for the rivalry to kick in.

Nah, why start small? Go for a Large, Wood Inlay model with Damascus blade. Live a little.

Seriously though, go with either a Large Plain or Large Computer Generated Graphic first. I use mine as a box cutter daily, and I don't think I'll ever need another utility folder.

For me the large would too big for EDC. I also love the basic gray of the plain, it develops character, rather than losing beauty, with use.
