first off I know several people will say that i need to get Parks 50 but right now thats not a option for me. I have been hardening 1/8 inch 1095 with a mix of cannola oil and chevron texaco 70 heated to between 120 and 130 degrees with good results. Now I'm in the process of attempting to harden a 3/16 in fighter in 1095 but can not get the blade hard enough. I even tried to used brine which resulted in me have to completely start over ... I was wondering if I'd get better results if I only quenched the blade or if I heated the quench to a higher temp? Any help would be greatly appreciated...
Thanks in advance
Jim

How are you heat treating your steel?
Why did you mix chevron 70 with canola oil?
Lastly, are you 100% certain it's 1095?

with a eveheat oven to 1475 for 15 min.
had both so i mixed it to completely fill my quench tank
Yes I'm positive it is 1095

I use 70 at room temp on 52100 and w2 and it works great. I can't say what adding canola to it might do though.
How are you testing for hardness?

I'd try and grind a few thousandths off it and retest with the files again.
