I have just received a knife that I won at a local (Ellenville, NY) raffle. The volunteers are convinced that this knife came from the local Schrade plant but I'm hoping to verify. I don't have the ability to post a photo so I will do the best I can with a description. Please forgive my Noobness. As a Ellenville transplant and "buy American" guy I would be ecstatic if I did recieve one of the last Schrades made at the local plant. If not, it is still a nice momento.

Descrip: 2 blade (joint on same end) 2.75" - 3.00" closed. 2" main blade clip/drop point engraved "Ellenville-Wawarsing 4th of July Celebration 2004". Tang stamped Schrade Walden N.Y. USA. Reverse tang bare. 2nd blade 1.375" drop point, tang bare. Both blades appear stainless. Silver colored end caps. 3 brass pins per side with stag?/delrin? handles. 261 (possibly a Ser#)engraved on end cap. Box: Plain white with "Ellenville-Wawarsing 4th of July 200" sticker on end flap. 0261 sticker on side.

I understand this is a shot in the dark but any help would be appreciated. Regardless of the true story it is a nice keepsake and I will not be parting with it. Thanks for your help.

Welcome Eyegor!

I cannot answer your question directly, but I'm sure one of our other regulars here can. I know one here who has posted these local Ellenville-Wawarsing knives before, so I believe yours to be legit. However, a picture is worth...well you get it.

If you would like, email me a picture and I can post it.

Welcome Eyegor!
Some one will be along soon who can verify your knife.
Welcome aboard.

Yes indeed these were done in conjunction with Schrade every year. This was the last year. Schrade would do these for free or at a nominal cost. That was the kind of neighbor they were. I did not get in on that raffle ( found out to late ) so you won it eh. Good for you nice knife and made in Ellenville. They were dandy knives and many people reserved them ( same number ) every year or you could go to the town hall and buy them. Here is an example it was the one issued in 1997 along with the original die used to scrim the pic. I just got back from Foxwoods seems like I not only missed the raffle but lost there as well. Strangly these have not appreciated like they should, most people do not know about them since it was a local type thing. They should eventually become quite sought after, once more collectors realize what they are. Some were bone or other variaions or materials and etched or specially shielded however most were scrimed. LT PS here are some variations notice the patriotic themes . The present country that produces Schrade knives has not offered to do continue this charitable and noble tradition . However Canal Street Cutlerty did do an issue for the town this year. While I am sure they did there best on cost I am just as sure they could not afford to donate these. PPS the big trapper is 2003. ( Sorry hard to see ). PPPS As I was informed they raffled off the last 50 of the 2004 issue as well as a couple other years they had left. Why they did all 50 at once I do not know?? I know some one who won 4 he took 20 dollars in chances.

Thanks for the quick reply. I've always been a knife and gun guy. I have always been on the EDC/user end of the spectrum though. Never gave much thought to collecting or commemoratives. Funny how one acquistion can change your point of view. Anyway, I always indulge my interest in local history as well. Now living in Ellenville, I not only can enjoy my cutlery history but my interest in canalling as well. Speaking of which, hopefully my finances will allow me to add Canal Street Cutlery to my collection before too long. Thanks again.
P.S. The fourth pic you posted is the model and year I have. If you don't mind what is the handle material on the 2004 editions?

Stagged Bone. Ah yes so much to collect. ( see pic) LT.

Ha! And just like that, our LT reaches over, picks up a real Canal Knife and snaps a photo to show us. Way, way cool!

Get used to this guy, Eyegor.. welcome to our forum, and please don't be a stranger.
