Hiya folks, hoping you can help me with a possible gift...

My wife works with a guy who is an avid hunter (bow and gun) of various critters, bear, cougar, deer, pheasant, moose... you name it. My wife has always wanted to learn how to clean a deer, and he's offered to take one and teach her how to clean it, and give us the carcass to be butchered and such. In addition, he gave us three pheasants today (which were breaded and baked by my wife...very tasty!). So, anyway, we're thinking that in return for this, it would be nice to give him a gift, and we were thinking of a good hunting knife. My wife used his hunting knife today on one of the pheasants, and she thinks it was one of the Buck Omni Hunter 10pts (http://www.buckknives.com/catalog/detail/486/222).

So, my question for you folks that like hunting is... what would you recommend for a nice hunting knife for someone that hunts a bit of everything? Parameters:

Would prefer production to custom for availability.
Would prefer relatively stain-resistant steels.
Price range we're thinking is around $100-$150, but I'm willing to buy quality if you can talk me higher.
As an alternative... I do have a spare Busse Muddy Meaner, and a Scrapyard SS4. Not sure if either would make a good hunting/skinning knife, as I know jack-all about skinning.

So, whaddya think?

Many thanks.

I've never come across a hunter who didn't appreciate a Dozier knife.

Yeah, take a look at Bark River. I'll be ordering mine soon after I make a decision for which I want first.

I can't say it enough, SOG Northwest Ranger. I have to many knives to count but for hunting and general purpose, it hard to beat this SOG knife.

As avid and generous as this guy sounds, I'd get him a Dozier K2, even though it's more.

Thanks for the advice so far... I had looked at the Bark River selection, but know nothing about what makes a good hunting/skinning knife. Also have heard nothing good about Dozier's knives, but I'm thinking that it would be difficult to get one prior to christmas (which would be a traditional time for gifting).

Keep 'em coming!

Take a look at a CASE X-CHANGER. You'll get four blades in one [one is a saw] and is perfect for the game he is hunting.
It's easily carried and the blades change without screws/wrenches etc.

Since you were looking at Buck to start, their 102 and 105 are classic Hunting/Skinning knives. My Dads 105 is ancient. It has been sharpened so much over time it looks like a fillet knife now but works great.

I just processed a deer with my brothers 102 and it brought me back to Buck.
I wanted a 'better' steel as well and found it in the Signature Series.
You can get both the 102 and 105 in S30V with full Tang and Checkered Walnut Handle. It is simply a beautiful knife based of a proven user.

Well, I'm leaning towards getting one of the Bark River knives and a Sharpmaker... right now he just has one of those little crossed-stick pocket sharpeners (like this...

Yes, yes, I know that some people have good luck with maintaining convex edges, but I'm not one of them. Hence the Sharpmaker.

Thanks!

I LOVE the Bark River Boone with the stacked leather. As soon as I get the money together I'm getting one for hunting/fishing.

If you get him a Bark River, make sure you give him a strop so he can sharpen the convex edge properly. Get the green and black compound bars from Bark River and make your own.
