Help with a gift FB for a hunter?

Guys do you mean the CS Master Hunter in the new VG1 steel or the old one in AUS-8?

I've never come across a hunter who didn't appreciate a Dozier knife.
Greg

Yep, animal tissue and Dozier D2. :D

agrussell should have something immediately on hand around the $200 range.
Also, bigger isn't necessarily better inside the animal cavity... imho

You don't have to wait to get a Dozier Yukon Pro Skinner at A.G. Russell's. I got mine immediately when I ordered it. I also got a Straight Personal which was out of stock when I ordered it, but they got more in within a week or so. A.G. Russell and Dozier have a long history together and they are close geographically, I doubt if any Doziers stay out of stock for long. Get the Dozier! :)

Well, the biggest problem with getting a Dozier is that every time I look at them, whether on his site or on AGR, I keep finding my mouse drifting over to the $800 Loveless design...

Well, I'm leaning towards getting one of the Bark River knives and a Sharpmaker... right now he just has one of those little crossed-stick pocket sharpeners (like this...

Yes, yes, I know that some people have good luck with maintaining convex edges, but I'm not one of them. Hence the Sharpmaker.

Thanks!

Dammit... now my office is wondering why I am screaming "NO NO NO, FOR THE LOVE OF PETE... NO!" at my computer. Please do not use a sharpmaker or one of those godforsaken crossed-stick thingies on a Bark River. It is so insanely fricken easy to maintain a convex edge, that even a blithering moron such as myself can do it easily. Piece of leather with green compound mounted on a piece of wood is all you need. Heck, a piece of cardboard with dried flitz on it will work too. Please go to the maintanence/tinkering etc. forum and find the tutorials for sharpening.

Now that I'm done screaming... do your friend a solid favor and purchase him a Bark River Fox River. There is not much this knife cannot do. DLT trading or Knivesshipforfree can take care of you right now. I'll edit in linkies here soon.

edited to add: linkage. www.dlttradingcompany.com and www.knivesshipfree.com

The knife sharpener on my can opener has been doing great work on my Sebenza, why should I bother carrying a piece of leather around?

(joke, btw)

Mongo, I've read about how easy it is to do, but with how easy it is to use a Sharpmaker, I've never spent much time trying to set or maintain a convex edge. (I only have one knife that's convexed... a Blackjack Mamba, but I don't use it, so it doesn't get dull).

What I'm thinking is that I don't want to get this guy something that he'll have to learn a new skillset in order to take care of. He certainly sounds like a capable enough guy (hunter, welder, etc), but I don't know if he's interested enough in knives to learn stropping. On the other hand, the thought of someone using one of those horrible little pocket sharpeners on a quality knife just makes me itch, hence the thinking about a SharpMaker.

I suppose that I should break out one of my cheap knives, my unused Lee Valley strop, and get practicing to see how difficult this is. If it turns out not to be too bad, I can always get him one of the strops along with the knife. :)

Ok, let me say this again.... maintaining a convex edge is so easy, I CAN DO IT The knives I have that cut the best, have convexed edges. I'm talking cut like a laser. You can still easily screw up with a sharpmaker or other "V" sharpener. Stropping is easy. Trust me. PM me if you don't believe me. Fox River. Buy it. Now.;):D

I have a couple of Bark Rivers, but put a regular edge on them, don't like convex myself.... Candy gram for Mongo!!!! ;)

Sorry, couldn't resist! :D

It's 5 minutes after reading this post and can now type. And I'm a former IBM typewriter service tech. LMAOROTF then ROTFLMAO.
Get the Bark River, and get the strop. Give him a tin star while your at it too.
Mike

I will have to chime in for Bark River. Awesome knives.
I love my Fox River/MicroCanadian package. A great combo blade package.;)

Okay, okay, okay, I get it... you people like Bark Rivers. :)

Since I'm going into town today, I'm going to see if I can con my wife into dropping by Target Knives to see what Barkies they have in stock. Not ready to buy yet, but I'd like to see what they're like. I have a Mamba, so I've seen Mike's work, but nothing from BRKT.

Incidentally, I'm also starting a thread over in "Tinkering" about stropping.

Thanks again!
