Help with a large, tough blade please?

Hi,
I’m new to the forum, and pretty new to knives. I’ve collected a few Elmax blades so far and now I’m after something a bit bigger (12-15” overall) and tougher.

I’d love the Medford Bonfire but it’s so expensive. That large, thick, 3V seems ideal for what I want. I looked at the Bark River Bravo 2, as well.

Any other ideas for high quality, thick 3V blades, or any other material with a close level of toughness would be great.

Thanks very much.

Best value would be a Cold Steel Warcraft Tanto 3V .

Hard to find the biggest , but the 7.25 " blade , 12" OAL medium sized is available .

Bigger is better for a chopper . But this one ain't bad for the length and easier to carry .

Cheers mate, it looks like a nice blade. I hadn’t considered a Tanto until yourself and OBOB mentioned that knife.

I don't know if they ship to the UK, but look at the Himalayan Imports section here if you want a real, working chopper. They perform at a high level and aren't too expensive.

I tried to use a Bark River Michigan Bowie as an actual working knife and ended up with huge chips in the blade just from chopping 2-3 inch branches. Very disappointing in a knife at any price, much less one that was over 300 bucks.

Where can I buy Carothers Knives in the UK? The behemoth looks a little too big, but this one seems perfect...

The post by Comis correctly directs you to the Carothers Performance Knives (CPK) subforum within the Blade Forums community. The website which you have found under their name is out of date therefore making their activities as presented in their subforum their most up to date. You may also want to read this thread which was painstakingly gathered and compiled about (pretty much everything) which Nathan Carothers has produced:

https://www.bladeforums.com/threads/cpk-encyclopedia.1685908/

Their Heavy Chopper which you had referenced was a prototype heavy duty chopper which I believe very limited numbers of were ever produced and marketed (6 or 8 in total, IIRC). Some of those changed hands for up to 4-5 times their original sales prices in the secondary markets because of their collectible value! The good news is that, Nathan made a very similar chopper to the Heavy Chopper but in much larger production numbers; this one is known as the Heavy Duty Medium Chopper (HDMC) which in fact is even more robust than the original Heavy Chopper! Don't let the adjective "medium" fool you as it is just a benign way of saying that it is a 10" blade length chopper as opposed to the larger 12" Behemoth or the more robust version of it, the Behemother.

The bad news is that, most of Nathan's choppers are now sold out if wanting one directly from him but they do come up from time to time in the Exchanges on here or if you wish, you may post a "wanted to buy" message in the subform's own wanted-to-buy/sell/trade link which is a sticky thread right on top if you should visit their subforum. The other bad news is that because of the current state of the global situation, vis a vis, shipping/pandemic et al, you may also have issues with shipping to your location in the U.K if I am correct in assuming your location. You may also wish to post a direct message in the CPK's subfrum by using the "Ask Nathan a question" or "Ask Jo (NinJo) thread" threads to find out if they have any surplus choppers which they may be able to work something out for you and your desire for shipping to the U.K. There are a handful of CPK faithfuls both in the U.K. and Ireland but there are no dealers/distributors for Nathan's products (actually there is one in the U.S. but since he is not a supporting member of this Site, I can not mention the name and furthermore, he gets so few knives from CPK which is not even worth mentioning him too seriously!).

Good luck in your search.

Also, what price range are you looking for?

Lots of great tough knives, with a significant price spread.

The Medford Bonfire is £450 and that’s my absolute upper limit, and the reason I’m looking elsewhere first. In fact, even if I decided on that knife I’d probably wait until Lamnia had a site-wide sale or something.

I bought a Benchmade Leuku for £135 the other day, but as soon as you add another 3-4” of 3V to a blade the price seems to double for some reason.

Not that you need more suggestions, but what about a Esee junglas? Its coated 1095 which is a great tough steel. It is under $200 and if you somehow manage to break it esee will give you another one, no questions asked. Oal is around 16.
