Help with a solid, inexpensive knife...

For the past year I have been giving Spyderco Byrd Meadowlarks to our Varsity Scouts (with written parental permission). I recently bought ten of them for $9 each. They are excellent quality for the money. I'd highly recommend the Byrd line for scouts. I expecially like the Byrd Crow for myself.

If you go Swis Army Knife, get the Tinker. You can buy them for under $20 and they have just the right stuff for a scout. It gives you this:

Large and small blades
Can opener with small screwdriver
Bottle opener with large screwdriver & wire stripper
Reamer with sewing eye
Phillips screwdriver
Toothpick
Tweezers
Key ring
Size 91mm (3.6")
Lifetime warranty
and is only ($12.43 BIN)...

BTW cas - I've got some nice knives (NIB Rough Riders etc.) that I would love to donate for your troop. You could disperse them to each of the boys that get their badge. Just make sure the parents sign a release. PM or email me or post here if you want them and how many you need; and, I'll send them out. teaguewh at pmt dot org

For little money, an Opinel #7 or #8 is really nicely universal. A lot lighter than the Buck 110 which is nice as well of course.
Otherwise, several non locking SAKS are interesting

yay, first post.

i'll throw my experience with the vic camper...my first knife.

saw is imho useless as it does not lock and has closed on me under what i would consider "normal" use for a saw blade. small blade was used the most as a hobby knife and for some whittling. never used much of the other blades or accessories, even when camping.

i was not a boy or cub scout.

BTW, tell your Scouts to quit watching Man-vs-Wild! His advice will kill them for sure! Survivorman, however, is the real deal.

In addition, my offer still stands. If you don't want them, then I'll consider any other Scout troops that do, on a first-come-first-serve basis. I have quite a number of good small folders that I think would work well for the purpose.

give them the classic: buck 110...it was my first also when i was a scout...they can decide later on in life if their going to freak over spydercos, kershaws, benchmades, etc....

Yes you can cut yourself closing a pocket knife, It is called learning. We already have enough laws that try to protect us from ourselves, Knives are tools which can hurt you a minor cut is a cheap lesson and one every knife person learns the hard way sooner or later. I started all of my kids and grand kids out with a Vic SAK, no regrets.

Totally agreed.

hey man,
Im an eagle scout and NOLS grad. I recently picked up a blade tech ganyana lite for about 20 bucks and it is a sweet little knife. I would also recommend the tenacious or some of the CRKT M16s or M21s lots of blade options in a solid handle.

just my 2 cents

It is nice to see people support knives made outside the US!

Both the birds and the SAK Thinker are nice cheap knives. I specially like the SAKs due to their useful tools, reminds me of the Magiver show.

The SAK Tinker is superior to the boy scout knife I had when I was a boy. I've been building a collection of SAKs lately and just decided to also try and collect the entire Spyderco Byrd collection. I'll buy a couple every month or so till I have them all. Someday they may be worth some real money, but I'll never sell them. I just love to collect all knids of knives. This month I'll probably buy a Cara Cara and a Raven. I'll also buy a couple more SAKs.

Most of the boys have these type of knives. Looking for something stronger to use building shelters and other survival chores that may be too much for SAK or other light folders.

That would seem to leave the Buck 110 although I'm sure some of the Byrd knives are up for that task but a fixed blade would be ideal.

I would be willing to bet if you approached a Walmart manager with a bulk buy you could easily get them for $20 bucks a piece if not less. There might even be a dealer on here that would get them to you closer to cost.

Buck 110 is probably the best option due to its cost, superior ergos/comfort for long, hard work and relative ease to sharpen (which I assume the boys will be doing). I would suggest getting a wood burning kit, or some other method,to have each Scout mark their respective knives.

Cass - what exactly do you mean (price range) when you say "inexpensive knife?"
