hello,
I have about a 1974 Case XX Stainless USA with the "tested razor sharp" etching on the master blade, its a nice red bone stockman.
The problem is its near mint/unused, but the master backspring is broken in two. This sure seems like a manufacturing defect. as there is no evidence of abuse on the blade, looks about unused. Would Case take this and fix it, or give me a new replacement, which I wouldnt really want instead? Have never sent them a knife and dont know their policies. Anyone out there have experience dealing with them on something like this? Thanks in advance.

I have never dealt with Case on a warranty or support issue myself. If you include written instruction to NOT replace the knife, I believe they will honor that request. If the knife model is still in production and they have replacement parts, they may be able to repair it. If the model is discontinued, all they can do for you is to replace it with a similar current model.

6347s are still in current production but there was a change in the early 90s from a 2-spring version to a 3-spring version. The current models of the 6347 pattern use three backsprings and the blades are not crinked (bent). Since yours is from before that time, you may be out of luck on the backspring since that is the specific part you are having problems with.

I doubt they would want to take apart a donor knife and use its backspring, so maybe I should just do the old fashioned thing and call them up. Dont really care for a brand new knife instead of this...

There are some guys here on the forum that do custom work on slipjoints. They might very well be willing to take on a spring transplant between same model knives. I have no idea what their fees might be. Glennbad is one that seems to get good feedback from people over on the Traditionals sub-forum. Worth a shot.

Thanks again. This knife has deep red bone scales/crisp jigging and a good etch and edge, a new replacement wouldnt be the same. Worth fixing.

update: I sent the knife to case right after this and forgot about it for a while. Recently it came to me that i hadnt heard anything from them on this. I found the tracking receipt to Bradford P.A., but somehow the numbers had faded away!! Opening a few packets in the mail, I didnt see till late night the envelope from Bradford PA! As I opened it i didnt know what to expexct, a new 6347 or maybe my old one???? The suspense built as I unwrapped the brown knife paper, ...feels smaller.....Holy Cripes the same knife!! A completely polished, shiny, Red bone stockman with what appears to be new backsprings and maybe even liners?? Let me check the blades...sharp as shit every one! And at no charge to boot. It came with a note explaining they repaired it, keep it oiled and all that, along with a Case knife info/warranty paper. Case is a class act in my eyes moreso now than before. i am and will be carrying it for awhile.

That's a heck of an update! Glad things worked out for you, and it sounds like Case went above and beyond.

Cool deal that accompany still stands behind their warranty or just plain nice to do that. Great news and thanks for sharing.
