Hi - I figured if anyone would know, it would be someone on here...
Found this ax head the other day. It was covered in rust and I did some electrolysis to clean it up. It appears to be a felling ax, Yankee pattern, weighs 3 1/4 pounds (3 1/4 also stamped on mid face). It has stamped "Old Yank" with two letters above it "N F or N E or W F/E" perhaps makers initials? It also has a "6" and "3" stamped on the bottom.
Any ideas on the age/maker etc? Or what the 6 & 3 on the bottom mean?
Thanks!

If I had to guess, I would congure up New England Axe Co - Old Yankee. The 6-3 would be the makers mark. Usually there is only one number for a maker - but maybe they used 2....hard to say, Ill see what else I can find.

Thanks- that sounds right, but I can't find any info on that company. Only they started in 1905 in Maine. Anyone have info on New England Axe co?

I know its a bit old but any more information on this one Operator? I picked up one today with the same stamp on it. "NE" over "OLD YANK", then below this on the cheek is the number "3" and the maker's marks are 58 on the bottom of the poll. I don't know if it is original but it has a handle that has seen a fair bit of use judging by how the handle looks/feels though there are a few rasp marks and chips of wood missing that have been rubbed smooth through the years. Haven't had a chance to clean it up yet but I'm interested to learn about it. Thanks.
