Hey everyone, I will be traveling to Guatemala in about a month and I am looking for a durable tough baseball type of cap. I don't want the standard cotton cap you can pick up at the mall. I'm looking for something a little more rugged that is still comfortable. Does anyone have any recommendations?

Tin cloth is about as durable as you will find.

i have been wearing an under-armor fitted cap for about a year and a half now. its 100% polyester so it is durable, doesnt soak up sweat, and doesnt get smelly. very comfortable and a bit under the price of a decent wool fitted.

I've been using one made of hemp on and off for some time now, and it's held up fine. It's a little rough, but it gets the job done and doesn't look like it'll be falling apart any time soon.

i rather like oilcloth caps. I don't have one in the baseball variety. However, i have looked at them several times. Great at beading water:thumbup:

I wear a baseball hat all the time and switch between 2 that I have had for over 5 years and wear one every day. I have found the elastic normally wears out before the rest of the hat and that takes years and years. If you're worried about them falling apart I don't think you need to. When they need washing I just throw them in the washing machine and then hang them up to dry. The ones I wear are the fitted variety so there is no plastic strap to break. I have Top of the World, Zephyr, and Nike as brands. I know you said you don't want this type but just thought I would mention it since they are easy to find in many different styles.

Edit: I just looked and the ones I wear the most both say they are 97% acrylic. I guess that is some type of polyester? Anyways, they aren't cotton.

I second the Filson Tin cloth cap pictured in the second post. I've had mine forever and it's my favorite hunting hat. It's also like wearing armor when you bump or brush your head against things.

Thanks very much all. Just got back from work and checked out the forum. Maybe I'll get one of those Filson's. I'm going to be in some fairly tough parts of the country and I would like to keep my noggin safe.

Interesting thread. I learned a few things, and I'm going to have to look into that Filson.

But really, isn't there only one hat you should wear to Central America? :p

Safe journeys and don't forget your bullwhip.

Are any of these hats washable? I am follically challenged and sweat through them and they get these nasty rings on the brim of most of my hats. I end up tossing them when they get gross.

If you get a Filson Tin Cloth hat you'll need to put up with the sweat stains. They can't be washed because they 'gain character with age' :)

I would imagine most are washable unless they have something put on it to make it water proof that can get washed off. I have always put my hats in the washing machine and then hang them to dry. They also make a plastic thing that the hat goes into that holds the shape and you then put it into the dish washer but I have no experience with those.

I love my Filson but it may be a bit warm for Central America. I was looking a UA caps for the wicking feature.

Are you sure you don't want something with an all around brim? I'd seriously consider something like a boonie hat.

North face and mountain hardware and brands like that all make baseball style caps out of some high speed materials.

I do have a waxed cotton Filson with a brim but I need a cap to take also.

I have waxed filsons and outbacks, great hats but they do not breathe well, more of a 3 season hat for me, and in the jungle you will sweat beyond belief.

I see you have one with a brim, bring it and a breathable ball cap

I go to Nicaragua 2-3 times a year. I once made the mistake of wearing a nice oilskin type ball cap as I was going during the rainiest season. That was a big mistake. The hat was way too hot-my cabeza wound up just as wet as it would have been w/ no hat.

Now I generally stick to some sort of boonie hat (a Nicaraguan friend hand-made me a nice one!)and this spring I think I'll try a straw hat-maybe something on the order of a Panama.
