Hey I was looking to buy some O1 steel from NJ Steel Baron and one option ask me if i want the "decarb" removed. What is "decarb", and do i need to have this removed to make a knife. What will it be like if i dont get it removed, will it be workable. Thanks alot.

The decarb is a rough texture that is a pain sometimes to work through. If you have the tools like a grinder, it shouldn't be a problem. If you don't have a grinder and you are working with files only; I would get it removed because it is a pain to get rid of with just sandpaper.

I always pay the extra $$$ for ground steel. When you consider the time and abrasives you save its a bargain.

Decarburized is the material near the surface where the carbon content has been lowered. It has to be removed otherwise the blade performance will be poor. You can do it or you can buy it already removed.

I agree fully with Darren. I believe in the long run, the precision ground 01 saves more money than the extra cost.

I buy my 01 precision ground from Pops. Its always pretty right out of the package. You're right on target with this.
