Help With D2 Steel!

I've never had a D2 knife rust, or show any signs of corrosion, and I don't treat them any different than my stainless knives.

I'm pretty much the same way and I haven't noticed any change in my D2 blades, but I have a used one that came to me with some patina. I have a blade in M4 that is about the same way. I do put oil on it sometimes but if I keep it wiped off it doesn't seem to change. But I did get some rust on it when carrying it in my pocket while sweating a lot working outdoors.

I think if you keep stuff wiped off of the blade, and if you don't have it in your pocket while sweating a lot, it will be fine. If you won't be able to care for it that much then wipe some oil on the blade occasionally. If you cut some food with the blade, leave some residue on it, and you are in a humid area, you will have some problems.

I have had knives made of D2 for 10 years and more and they have no more issues than any stainless blade.

Let me guess . . . you live some where out here where I am in The Wild, Wild, West.
Heck if you sit outside in the wind when you put on hand lotion the stuff dries up and blows away before it soaks in. Kidding but not by much.

Yah, rusty tools is the least of my worries. It is hard to relate to all the oiling and wiping. I have heard stories of folks in Oregon though . . . sad the stuff that gets ruined from moisture and mold.

I'd deal with the rust if the performance was good enough
M4, 3V, A2, white steel

Great stuff

But D2 is alot of work with minimal return on performance here in Oregon land

Oregon land

I still can remember when I was a tiny kid, we visited family in Oregon . . . the smell of the redwoods and the forest . . . it was so great . . . very different from here.

Hi. Only own one folder in D2, the Viper Free (an amazing EDC, by the way :)). I use it, as all my others, for different EDC tasks, from food prep to the cutting of different packaging materials, from recreational wood-working (whittling, carving, etc.), to light-duty hiking/camping tasks. Franky speaking, I see no difference in comparison with my other 100% stainless steels blades. Sure I take care of all of them, rinse in fresh water after use, wipe them off (blowing some compressed air as well) and put a drop of oil (often just baby oil) if they go in the drawer for a while. Never experienced any spotting or rusting.

About maintenance, I can say, for my use and own experience with this knife, it keeps a workable edge for a fairly long time, meaning I don’t need to sharpen it every week, like I have to do, for example, with my 440 C steel blades, specially after wood working. It takes a very keen edge (I mainly use a Lansky system today) and never experienced any chipping or other issues with the edge.

This said, I wouldn’t venture to take it to a beach holiday, Spyderco Pacific Salt is the one for me, in that case :).

I've never had any dealings with normal D2, only the CPM-D2 edge on my Kershaw JYD II. I was initially concerned about corrosion as I am one of those unfortunate individuals prone to create my own puddle in warm weather but so far it has been fine. That may be down to the climate here in Texas or to the DLC that Kershaw applied to the blade. I was not a fan of the coating on my leek but it has been perfect on the JYD no matter what I do to it. As for edge retention, holy mother... I worked in a warehouse making cowhide rugs for a while and stopped carrying my razor blade once she came into my life. It would easily press cut hair on hide leather and never really lost that killer edge. I will say that the one time I had to bring the edge back from non-razor it took at least forty five minutes on ceramic stones. Amazing edge, never chipped. PITA to sharpen. I'm looking forward to S30V.

Only D2 knives i've owned and used are from Benchmade, the Adamas and a 710. I can say 100% that my 2 examples have performed fantastic. I've absolutely hammered my Adamas and it's just smiled at me in the edge holding department, takes a screaming edge. The 710 has had no rust or spotting but i always take care of my stuff and live in Oz so the weather is decent. Youtube Adamas hard use test and watch the russian guy Vininull do the test. Then watch him test D2 in the Lionsteel and see the differences, Benchmade do their D2 well.
