Help with Damascus Blank

New to knife making or really just adding handles to purchased blanks. Purchased a Damascus blank that came dark colored with a rusty look. Do I need to re-etch the blank to get the color and pattern to show again or does something else need to be done to it? Have only worked with stainless up to this point. Trying to learn as much as I can. Thanks for any help.
 
If you post a picture it might allow us to get a better sense for what stage of development the blade is in.

Looks to me like what you want to do now is take some 2000 grit sandpaper and lightly sand the surface to bring out the contrast.
