Help with design

finalknifedesign.jpg

So here is the final design (I think) and my last question. I have Rosewood handle scales and I want to make them removable so I can possibly store small items in the handle (the little box in the handle is an x-ray view of the cutout underneath the scales) Would the 2 screws, and their locations, be sufficient?

Other than the match storage being possibly impractical, it looks good. You won't know if you like it until you try it.

well i figured i can put a ferro rod (wrapped in cotton balls so it doesnt bounce around) and forget about it so its there if i truly am ever in a survival situation. Plus I figured the cutout would help with the balance issue and put a little more weight forward for chopping tasks

Design looks good.

My take on the ferro rod, if you are really in a survival situation, cold numb fingers and need to use a screwdriver to get to your rod

oops you lost the screwdriver - not so practical

I like having it on the sheath and using it constantly so it's second nature and quick to access.

Love that sheath. I fully intend on making a sheath out of kydex with a very similar pocket for a ferro rod--i just wanted one inside the handle just in case i lose the other one (2 is one and 1 is none)--i am also gonna attach a washer either to the lanyard or somewhere on the sheath to use as a screwdriver (
i would like to use standard flathead rivets to hold on the scales)

I think the overall looks good. Maybe just a tad smaller finger swell, but that is just my personal preference. Remember...steel is cheap, you can just make it and tweak it. Aldo seems to have a few bars of steel for sale :D Shape, use, reshape if necessary, if not, enjoy it and move on to the next one :)

Well its back to the drawing board--tried the design today with a paint stick (even cut out handle scales)--my hand feels too exposed to the blade. I need the handle to come all the way around and not have my finger touching the blade.

the handle scales are gonna have to be a little more like this--it makes my finger feel much safer-lol- and i feel like i have more control of the blade.

That is better. Make the front curve ( finger choil) smooth, or it may pinch the finger....often called feeling "hot".

I'm not sure why you are so focused on the "finger being exposed to the blade". Have you been cut before using a standard production knife?

I ask because most of the standard production knives have gentle curves for the handle... your curves are tending toward being more aggressive. That may be something you think you need, but in reality, I think it's probably overkill. Remember, you're looking at this as a flat two-dimensional project at the moment. When you go into the third dimension, you can add gentle curves on the side as well that will also stop your hand from moving forward. It doesn't have to be all done by the two dimensional flat piece.

Think in 3D and you'll get better designs.

I've never been cut but definitely don't want to start. lol. I do need to take into consideration that the 3d will be much different than the 2d. That is why I cut out handle scales and put them on the paint-stick cutout. I didn't like the way it felt and according to you guys that's really what is the most important. I also think I may be over thinking this a bit because I want to honor the generous donor who gave me these materials by having my first knife be a good one.
