I'm ordering some 440c for my first knife project. The only major tool I don't have is the right oven to temper and unfortunately I don't have much space to build an oven. Anyone here know of a community place (maybe a machine shop) or sharable oven where I could try my first few blades? I'm in West LA (Santa Monica area). Thanks!!

No oven but i have a full shop here in West LA, you can stop by if you like and I can see what advise I can give.

Just for clarity, you are talking about Heat Treatment, not tempering. Tempering is the final stage in HT when the steel has excess hardness and brittleness removed.

send it over to Tru Grit like SBuzek said.

They have a full knife shop and knifmaker who does the heat treating with good turn around times

Oh man I didn't see any of the alerts that this thread actually got replies! Sorry all!

I've done some research and decided to take a stab at building a computer controlled kiln. I'm pretty sure I can get all the parts for <$150 and build something big enough to do large kitchen knives (that's my upper limit). Also yes, I mistyped in my original post and I'm really looking for the equipment to to the entire heat treating process. From what I've read the tempering part itself can actually be done in a standard home oven (but that will moot if I get my kiln going as the PID controller and equipment I'm getting should be good to arbitrarily control from room temperature up to about 1300°C.

I'll try to document the process of making the kiln just for the heck of it. Basically this off Amazon: Inkbird Dual Digital PID Temperature Controller 2 Omron Relay Thermostat 110-240V ITC-100VH + 40A SSR + K Sensor plus a 2000W Kiln Furnace Kanthal A1 Heating Element Coil Heater Wire (plus some firebricks and metal framing that I'll grab from Home Depot).

@hellspawn415 I'm definitely interested in talking more. I tried to PM you but I don't think I have permissions for some reason - maybe I'm too new here. Can you hit me up?

the firebricks from Home Depot are not what you need

You want K2300 Insulating Fire Brick IFB from Thermal Ceramics.

Try a local pottery supplies place, they sell bricks for kiln repair

Yea, its not going to let you PM me. If you want i can give you a tour of my shop on monday or tuesday afternoon. Do you know where Olympic and westwood is?
