I have the opportunity to get a bunch (around 20) new 60 grit 2"X80" belts for 50 cents each. Not sure of the make yet. I know they are blue. Does anyone know how I can cut them down to 72" and re-connect them?

Thanks in advance

I think what you are looking for is Filament-Reinforced Tape. I had used it on some custom belts several years ago but dont know of a current source.

What kind of grinder? KMG would probably run them, Im guessing at that though.

Coot with a ten inch wheel. I haven't got a motor for it as of yet, so It's not up and running. Having a hard time find a used 2hp. I may just have to bite the bullet and buy a new one.

It was heat set, there was a pretty involved process to clean and line them up and then iron on the tape. we also epoxied the edges just so there would not be a gap.

Do you think it was a 3M product you used. For 50 cents a belt I think it might be worth the work.

Have you mocked up an 80" belt to see if you can get it onto the Coote? Might be a little harder to run oversized on one. Unless the belts are a high quality/high dollar belt, it might not be worth the time. You can get 60 grit blue AO/Zirconia belts from Pop for $2 each, so if you put time and $1 into fixing the belts, it wouldn't be worth it to me unless there was more than 20.

I don't think the Coote's will run them at 80". There is nothing to take up the slack except maybe finding a larger wheel. With a KMG you could move the tool arm to take up the slack.

I believe the upper roller can be moved up by adjusting the supporting structure. I know there is a bolt and the back is two pieces but I have not tried to adjust the height of the upper roller, maybe a email to coote.

check e-bay for the motor . type in farm duty motors for the search . They are hi torque continious duty motors .

Having a Coote myself, and having to make up for the extra 8", I personally would not do that modification on the grinder over 20 belts...it was designed to run a 72" belt and if you try to make the structure taller to run the belt, i'm guessing you might not have the stability....then again, I could be wrong.

Stacy (Bladsmth) knows about that tape that holds together the seams of grinding belts. Ask him. I remember him saying the tape is mucho $$$$.

Hi 308 Sniper,
Grizzly sells a 2hp TECF motor for about $230.
I just bought the 1.5hp To replace my 1.5 pool motor that I had been using for 6 years.
The pool motor was an Open drip proof that filled up with grinding grit. I kept it some what clean but it finely died.
I hope this helped.

Thanks all for all the comments,
The belts are at a local hardware store here in western NY. The next time I'm there i will check on the make of the belts.

You might be able to use carpet reenforcing tape, it's heat activated, probably have to rent the sealing gun though they're really expensive and at that point it's probably not worth it price wise. A zirc 2x72 is only about $3.50 or so.

I found out some more on the belts today. They are VSM brand KK716 belts 2"x80" in 60 grit. They say made in Germany on them and are aqua blue in color. I thought they only had 20 of these, however it looks like they around 100 in stock for 50 cents each. I can't seem to find the heat tape to put them back together after shortening them. I also can't find much info on these belts to see if it's even worth messing with.
Anyone have any impute.

FWIW when I had the Coote I ran it with a 1hp motor, I think, and no issues at all. It may have been 1.5, but either way it was no problem.
