Help With HAK Blade Shape

I'm looking at purchasing a Hideaway knife and am torn between the straight edge and the tiger claw. It seems as though the curve of the tiger claw may make sharpening difficult. I've never owned a knife whith this shape blade. I'm buying it mostly for self defense but since it's 440C, and I may use it for other things, I want to be able to sharpen it easily with my Lansky.

I can't see it would be too much of a problem with a little practice. I have a straight utility and it is a wonderful tool. Good luck.

I believe the utility model HAK is only available in straight edge & 440C. They start at $69 or the tumbled finish & I believe $99 for color coated models.

In order to get the tiger claw model, I believe you have to upgrade to the S30V model & they start at $139, but are typically $150-250.

It depends what you want, but the $69 utility HAK (I believe around $75 with shipping), is a pretty good deal, easy to sharpen, & holds an edge pretty well. I forget who does the heat treating on the 440C models, but it's not your typical 440C.

Just food for thought.

I bought a straight second hand and love it. I tried to/did(i guess) order a DLC s30v straight ground by Ken Brock but they never reply to my emails and they have no nuber posted...I've been hearing that they have been hving a lot of problems. Hopefully they will straighten up so I can get y second HAK.

Darwin,

I heard the same thing but read some recent posts regarding a change in management and that things are turning around for the better.

Been going through the same issue...Been watching that site since January, saving up my spare change for a straight utility in my size. Saw one. Once. Disappeared in a day. My options are some dazzle-finish titaniums that have been there for a year, and these Tiger Claws they keep making more of. I'm going pure utility mostly, and my beliefs prefer a straight blade for those other kinds of purposes, so it's just been a year-long waiting game. I COULD just get the claw, but it's such a niche blade shape I just can't justify it.

As it's a one man shop days (IMO) it is extremely difficult to reply to emails, or so has been posted over the last two years, before and after the change in executive directorship. Apparently the decision was made to ship knives rather than answer emails and get nothing done at all. Sounds like common sense.

The web site is a little difficult to navigate and purchase from, but the Available Now seems to work OK, (I did for me last year) and knives are still being received, rather quickly if they are standard, as search will show. Customs were always long lead - 6 to 12 months. I do not know who is currently grinding them.

If it's available and the proper fit, buy it - and that's what is probably happening, just like Peter Atwood Prybabies, they sell out in just hours. Some folks have their home page set just to check status on an hourly basis.

FANatics.

I love my straight HAK, but the availability of competing designs would give me pause to consider their price and in-stock status, especially now that I see it as a specialty blade I don't/can't justify for EDC.

Hey Tirod,
Are you saying the designs, other than straight, are specialty or all HAKs are specialty? Do you not find it very useful?

Alright, now it looks like they did a batch of black claws with belt sheaths. Some new production model, probably a contract deal judging by the sheath type and dark coloring.

Custom is anything not Utility, usually anything S30v, colored, patterned, or differently shaped. The Utility Straight and Claw are off-the-rack sized models, everything else is custom made from various makers. However, let's say I finally crack and want a 4.0 Utility. They'd have to make it since I haven't seen one in ages, meaning there's the custom time despite being a standard model.

Get your size, and save the link for 'Available Now' until you spot and snatch your HAK of choice. It's the best route with emails being shot lately. Still expect some wait (Few weeks) for sheathing, however.

Does anyone have more pics of the new claw 440c blades with the straight together? Also a pic of the bikini sheath for both as a comparison would be nice too. Thank you.

i've had various shapes and have sold all but the straights. depends on how you want to use it/what you will use it for. just scored the hak of my dreams....something i've been looking for for years....a strider ti straight. love the thing to bits.

PS: if prblems exist buying new (as is the rumor), buy second hand when they come up. that's how i've bought the 6 or 7 i've bought in the past, all at great prices.
