Hi there, Im a beginner knife maker here looking for a bit of advice on how to finish the final edge on my knives
I did a fair bit of research on the topic and am somehow still confused so forgive me for starting a new thread on a topic thats probably been beaten to death.
anyways - I have a small batch of knives that are basically ready for heat treat, i just need to clean them up a bit more. I have left about a dime's worth edge on there so they don't warp (some are slimmer, I hope there are no adverse effects) but i'm unsure as to how to finish the blades after they are done being heat treated.
to grind the blade profile before HT, i have them set with a jig at a specific angle (which ranges between 6-9 degrees per side depending on the knife) so my question is do I just clean them up on the belt sander at the same angle with progressively increasing grit until I both a: I get the finish that I want and b: I have a sharp edge? or do I need to make some sort of secondary bevel towards the cutting edge that is a steeper angle than what the blade profile is cut too? (this seems like it might not be a necessary step however its very common on almost all knives i see so im curious)
I realize that there are 101 ways to skin a cat and i'm probably just overthinking a simple process but if someone would be kind enough to explain to me how I should go about finishing these knives i would really appreciate it. I have spent a lot of time grinding them and I would hate for my inexperience in the final stages to throw all that time and effort out the window.
kind regards,
bd
