Help with ID this Japanese WW2 Sword

Hi All,

I am hoping someone can provide me with more information about this sword that my Grandfather brought back from WW2. What I am particularly curious about is the mark/emblem on the top of the hilt. I have not found any in my research with this mark and most do not have one. Thanks!

I think you would need to provide a closer, in-focus photo of the mon which is not covered by the photobucket logo.
