Help with identify and handle design/choice

This was an old hunting knife my grandpa used and it somehow got underneath the kitchen sink cabinet and Ive been wanting to restore and refinish it with a satin finish and use it as a hunting knife myself. Last night I was carefully removing the pommel and handle material so that I could restore the blade surface and I noticed some stamping on the tang. Could someone help me read and identify this knife? Also I was wanting to do a micarta handle on it or possibly a deer antler handle but want something that will still have good grip and not have a tendency to slip when bloody. Any suggestions to handle material and grit finish?

But It looks like an old German Knife that was mass produced back before WWII.
 
Anyone else have any ideas as to what is stamped in there or a better way to find out what is stamped in there? On one side it looks like 102 near the threads and has like a little house shaped stamp as well.

The knife appears to be a standard, post 1950 Solingen hunting knife. They were available in any number of guard/handle combinations. The numbers are pattern numbers.
 
Any handle recommendations for a good grip hunting knife with very limited slip while covered in blood?

Thanks for helping me identify the knife. Glad to hear its solingen steel. I tend to like that steel a lot.
 
Looks like it had a leather handle, if posible I'd go back with a stacked leather handle, they realy are comfortable and work great when wet.
 
I do like the leather handle but I shy away from it as a hunting knife handle due to the fact that it holds moisture which will lead to rust and id rather not take it apart again to fix the rust problem. You had the same idea I had originally.
 
You could give the tang a coat of epoxy and allow that to cure before assembling the handle.

The last stacked leather handle I did I gave it 4 good soakings in Spar Varnish and it is pretty much stabilized. After 3 coats, it was nice and hard but still had some fibrous texture.
 
Quick question on finish, if I do the blade in a satin finish, should i also do the brass guard and pommel in satin or should I buff them? Was thinking about just going with a 600grit satin finish.
