Help with linerlock

So, I got a linerlock 'blank' through eBay to learn on. It's kind of a neat looking thing - a 3 1/2" spearpoint blade with a false edge and finger grooves in the liner halves.
The problem is that, when closing it, the lock pushes the blade into the liner on the opposite side even though the blade is snug on the pivot (it moves freely but there's almost no sideplay) This is causing scratches in the (polished!) blade. I've tried shimming it over with thin washers made from foil stock, but it doesn't seem to make any difference. I've also tried to carefully back-bend the lock a little to reduce the side-load it puts on the blade but that didn't help either.

Any thoughts or tips would be a huge help. Thanks guys.

It could be several things Deadeye. The pivot hole in the blade may not be perfectly perpendicular. The pivot hole in the blade may be out of tolerance. The pivot holes in the scales may not be perfectly perpendicular pivot hole in the scales may be out of tolerance. You may have a scale that isn't perfectly flat.

Do you have a surface plate or something very very flat ? Small hole gages and a micrometer or a set of zz gage pins ? These would all help troubleshoot the problems you're having.

Thanks David. I like the lines of this one enough that I'm going to order a couple more to tinker with. I think the first thing I'll do is check them on a polished granite tile I use as a surfacing pad to see if it's the liner or the blade. Thanks for the suggestions !
