I have a couple of MT's that I want to customize a little. Has anyone removed their thumbstud's before?

I'm sure I can get them off but I want to be able to put them back on again later.

Any suggestions?

You have to heat the thumbstud with a propane torch or a lighter enough to loosen the loc-tite they use but also don't heat the blade so hot as to damage it. Also you need to cover the insides of your pliers with leather or felt to avoid damaging the stud. Be careful because MT will not replace the stud unless you send the knife in with $10 postage, as I found out personally.

As an addition to lifters post, A common household hairdryer will also work to loosen the loc tite. Also without as much of the danger of overheating as the other two. (and none of the yucky black stuff (carbonisation?) that ligters leave...

P.S..... Why do you want to remove the thumbstud? I figure you plan to polish the blade... whatever you are doing, be sure to show us how it turns out.

Thanks for the good advice, I'm planning on either giving them a polished blade or satin finish or both (2 pieces I'm thinking of doing).

I've customized other knives in the past and they're posted at http://www.bladeforums.com/ubb/Forum60/HTML/000369.html in The Gallery if you'd like to check them out.

A soldering iron works very well on clip screws, so you might want to try using one on the studs

... does anyone have replacement screws available for them (the screws that hold the pocket clip to the hilt) ?

I spoke to MT today and they said I should send mine in, for $7.50 they'll replcae all the screws that need it, re-spec everything, sharpen if necessary and ship it back to you. It's a great value for $7.50.

Don't know if it's worth it just for screws but my blade rubs and is off center so I'm doing it, and some of the screws need replaced. I'm not the original owner so I didn't push about warranty plus it's hard to justify the stripped head of a screw as an in-warranty item

All my experience with MT has been great and they offer 24 hour turn around to boot.
