So, I picked up a 590, and the barrel is a little loose. It appears the mag tube is not quite screwed all the way in, but when I remove the barrel and cap, I cannot get the tube to budge. From my research, removing the tube and screwing it all the way back in will solve the loose barrel issue. Anyone have any suggestions. I might have to pick up a new strap wrench I think, but if someone can identify something I am missing, let me know.

Yes. I have found that the amount of force applied is directly related to the severity of damage I cause.

is the bolt locked forward?
try opening the bolt - trick I've used in reassembling other shotguns in the past.

Which is why I am asking ;) I have learned in my 30 years that my 6'3" 275lb self should not "force" anything.

No, bolt is at 50% open per mossberg instructions.

first, make sure the mag tube cap (which holds the barrel tight) is screwed all the way down (just don't over-do it). Then, close the bolt all the way, and try to move the barrel.

Also, what kind of stock, forend, etc....setup do you have?

p.s. What is making you think the barrel is loose?

The barrel moves in the receiver. Stock forend from Mossberg. its a 20 inch barrel, 8+1 with ghost ring sights, bayonet lug, standard stock, no heat shield.

if it was purchased new, I'd consider taking it back to the place you got it and having them "fix" it - that way if it gets screwed up, they're responsible.
if used or not convenient, I'd look at a strap wrench to remove it and see if it's cross threaded.
good luck.

Can you send it back to Mossberg with a "it's defective" note pinned to it?

I just might. I have a call in to their customer service. The issue for me is time. Its a bit of a drive to where I bought it, and I already tossed the box, though I have all the paperwork. It may be that I need to send it in, I will see what Mossberg has to say about it. I was planning on taking it out, I will hold off and see what they have to say about it. My research suggests that its a simple fix if I can get the mag tube off. The mag cap holds the barrel in place, and if the tube is too far forward relative to the receiver, the barrel will float slightly in and out of the receiver.

I haven't read this thread but I just got off the phone with richard j (paper wheel guy) and he told me to tell you... push down on the barrel while tightening the mag extension tube. If this doesn't fix it, send him a PM or email with your phone number.

Eh, never had a mossberg issue before. When looking at an 870 and a Mossberg side by side, quality was comparable and I liked the features for the Mossberg better.

till you use the snot out of it.. then you see the difference. visual quality is nothing compared to actual working quality.. we use the crap out of our guns and have always seen issues with mossbergs.. thats why we do not own any, anymore.... just our experience. btw most of our shotties are 15 yrs old or older. the remmy's still work like the day we bought them. the mossberg's? not so much.. as you see with your loose barrel (assuming you didnt not tighten the lug at the tip of your foregrip)...

Fair enough, I heard enough stories from friends who are vets who have used the 500 and 590 in the military that I don't doubt its reliability, everyone's mileage varies.

if i am not mistaken, same model but built different. similar to the cop model fo the 870 compared to the civi model of the 870.. (correct me if i am wrong).. the non civi model is built better than what you buy at walmart..

I know that the 870 law enforcement is built in the segregated portion of the factory. For Mossberg, I know for a fact that the military just buys 500's and 590's straight up, as well as the 590A1 military model. In truth they also buy 870's (not sure what model). I have no need for the heavy barrel, so that was the only reason not to buy the A1, that and price. I am 99% sure what the problem is, and if I cannot fix it quickly at home, back to the factory it goes. At the moment though, my other shottie is going out for repair - its a 67 Browning A5, needs new springs.

So end of story, I was able to use a paper back copy of the Zombie Survival Guide as padding to push hard on the barrel, which allowed me to fully tighten the magazine cap. Basically, it needed just one more click to be completely tight. Thank you all for suggestions and assistance.

You would not believe how helpful this thread has been to me. I purchased a new 590 about 2 months ago and put about 350 rounds through it now. I first noticed it after I had snapped on an Ontario Knife M7 bayonet (which *barely* caught the end of the magazine cap); the bayonet did not fit so I purchased a washer as per another sites forum to go under the magazine cap. Went out to my private range and fired about 50 rounds and while cleaning up I noticed the magazine and barrel were loose; I have a sling mount on the front so they move together. I do 99% of my own work as I have all my life, but if this fix will not work for me today I am going to seek a gunsmith with experience in Mossberg. The bayonet and washer are coming off. Thanks again for a very useful thread; this thread is the reason I joined bladeforums.

OK, here's a silly question. Why the hell do you need a bayonet on your shotgun?

I could tell you how to fix your problem, but I'll let the "experts" do it.
