Help with motor size

Was going to buy an old drill press for the motor and pullys, but when I asked about the HP on the drill press he said 3/5 hp

Does that make sense??
I'm not to keen on this subject and have never heard of that size.
I know I need at least 1/2 hp for what I'm doing.
I'm taking it that 3/5 hp is a hair more than 1/2 hp.

Or at least that's what I'm hoping.

Any help??
I'm sure I'm probably overthinking this.

Ok thanks
I looked it up several different ways...
It's on a harbor freight drill press and thought it was the China's way of interpreting something different .

Double check it is TEFC. Many drill press motors are open frame ... which won't work for a grinder. I would also consider 1HP the minimum for a knife grinder.

My plan was to use it to slow down my second 2x42 for detail work.

Is it because the motor is open not sealed?
Or is there a different issue?

If it is not a TEFC or totally enclosed fan cooled motor it is susceptible to getting metal dust inside. Since metal is conductive eventually this will cause a short circuit in the motor and it will fry. Since this is from a HF machine the motor is almost certainly made to the lowest acceptable specs in the electric motor industry meaning it will likely fry even sooner.

My advice would be to keep an eye on ebay or craigslist. A motor that size could be had relatively cheap by my estimates. The only caveat to me is how common one at that HP is in a TEFC. I also agree with Stacy that you would probably be unhappy with its performance being under 1HP unless all you are doing is sharpening or light surface finishing with high grit belts.

Question: You didn't list the RPM, why do you think it will slow down your grinder? It could if your current motor is 3450RPM and this one is 1750RPM or lower.

I was going to use the pullys to slow it down.
Taking off the side with the disk on it. And installing a pully system.

So was thinking of buying the drill press to get motor and pullys in one purchase.

But now I'll look for a sealed motor
Thanks
