hey guys here are a few pictures of what i have done so far with my first attempt at a knife, its 3/16 thick 1095 steel thats about 9 1/2inches long and i have done most of my grinding and still need to do my pin holes but my question is when do i stop the grinding and heat treat? because i thought that if it was grinded to close to finished then it would be to weak for the quench and crack? im not a great photogropher but i hope the pictures can somewhat help

From the pics it looks like you pretty close. What's the edge thickness?

Bout time you show us some pics. :D Looks great man. Do you have a set of calipers to measure the thickness?

yep i have my caliper with my right now it says my edge is 0.034inch by the handle and about 0.03 by the tip how is that

another question i forgot to ask is do i finish all grinding before or after tempering?

Finish after tempering, go straight from the forge or oven into the tempering oven. Dont let the knife go below about 120 degrees. After tempering, grind slowly with a sharp belt. If the knife is too hot to hold with your bare hands, it is too hot. Dip it often in water.

I shoot for about the thickness of a dime before heat treat.

I shoot for the thickness of a dime also. Heat treat and then finish grind and polish. Is that a piece of bocote that the knife is laying on in the picture.
