Hello everyone, you guys have a great community here. I've decided to buy my first real blade. I currently own a D2 steel KA-BAR and I love it but I love this STRIDER knife even more...

The Strider HT-S is THE knife I am obsessed with. This is because of my obsession with the Metal Gear Solid series. MGS3 is my favorite in the series and Snake, the main character's CQC (close quarter combat) knife was inspired by the HT-S. My obesession of an obsession.

My question is this, I have the option of getting this knife as is with the tiger stripe finish or getting it without (all black) directly through the awesome people of Strider Knives. What are the pros and cons of each and which would you pick?? I look forward to your helpful replies and being a member of the bladeforums community.

It doesnt matter which coating you pick. Whatever looks better to you. Exact same knife with either coating.

Which one would I get?

Neither. Think Im going to drop $325 on a knife with paracord handle. Nope

I love the paracord handle. It's the same as the knife in the game. I've been reading about the tiger stripe finish and how its rust prone. I was wondering what the pros and cons of the black finish were.

The black Striders are waaaay better performance wise than the tiger stripe. The striped ones are grit blasted while I've not seen a black blades one that was. I've had many many stripey Striders & currently have two (SnG & EB-S). They rust incredibly more easily & hinder cutting ability. I (somehow) do like the way they look but I always spend hours knocking down the (very aggressive) grit blast for these two reasons. I've been using a 3M pad then red rouge on cardboard then Flitz paste on cardboard. For whatever reason you like what you like, enjoy it!

Between the two I'd go with the black blade, tiger stripe never moved me too much.

Now I know your choosing this particular knife because of the game, but I would def recommend you looking at some of Striders folders instead of a fixed blade.

You can pick up a really nice SnG for $350-375 and IMO its so much more worth your money.

Just my .02

Jesus that's kinda of high for a para cord handled knife. Blade to handle ratio isn't that pleasing to the eye either. Do what makes you happy brother

Looks like that blade would be painful to work with. Strider makes excellent folding knives, but I'm not thrilled about that blade. If it was my cash, it would certainly be going to an SnG, but if you dig it the more power to ya brother.

I think if I were to get that knife I would get it with the textured G-10 and not the cord wrap.
But if the Cord Wrap is what you like, go for it.
I would probably go Tiger Stripe just because it's different than the regular all black I see all the time.
But if the Tiger Stripe has issues, I would definitely go all black.
Black with G-10 would be my pick.

Welcome.

Are you more interested in the game or having a usable knife? If you want "the game", then get what's used in the game....get the tiger stripes...who cares about "rust prone"? If you are worried about the "game" tiger stripe getting rusty in actual use, then you should be equally worried about the paracord wrap and how it adversely affects use.

It seems you need to pick "game" or "real world use." Either one is fine...it's just that you cant get both in this situation.

Buying a knife because of some silly videogame is just... silly.

Eh. It's just like any other "fantasy knife" in that case. Or getting an Alamo Bowie, etc. 'Scool.

That said, thinking a video game knife or fantasy correlates to real world functionality...that is silly. You rarely get both "fantasy" and "reality" in one package.

Reminds me of the United Cutlery Rambo knives many of us played with after seeing the movie. Not really the best knife to actually use, but hey, we were RAMBO dammit and it was fun!

If it makes you happy, get what you like.

Buying a production knife at a crazy, made-up markup because everyone else has one, and not being able to admit that you're just caught up in the fever...that's just silly. And yet I see it every day here on BF.

Welcome to bladeforums first off!
Im not sure why your getting bashed to each his own
I'd go with tiger stripes tho over black

Wow at bashing this guy, just wow

Your should get the blade that you like best, I have heard that tiger striped blades are sharper tho... :)

I played MSG on the gen. 1 playstation...great game. My little guy is a huge Black Ops fan and has been bugging me for weeks to get him a ballistic knife like the one in the game.

As far as finish, I think tiger stripes are pretty sweet for a collectable that I would never use, however, I don't even care for black finishes on knives that I use.

I have a hard time believing the finishing method on otherwise identical knives leads to one performing waaaay better than the other (that's way with four As, serious business).

A far as rust goes, it's s30v, it's pretty darn stainless. so unless you are carrying this thing strapped to your sweaty skin in the jungle, or take it salt water fishing it should be fine with the simplest of maintenance. no matter what the finish.

Get some tiger stripes!! That's what's in the game right?

Duh, everyone knows tiger stripes are sharper and more stealth :D ;)

Not that it has to do with any real life use, but if you DON'T plan on using it,I have to warn you::: I have had terrible luck with Strider's black coated blades. I've had to sell some as "used" because the black came from their factory already marked up. This was as recent as a year ago. Tiger stripes hide the wear much better.

Good luck! :)
