HELP!! With my first knife!! (STRIDER)

Welcome to Blade Forums. Buy what you like. Knife purchases are not rational for most of us. We have more knives than many people can use in a lifetime, but we buy more. Don't take no guff from anyone. Live the dream grasshopper, walk the rice paper.

Buying a knife because of some silly videogame is just... silly.

Meh, it seems a little silly, but his reason is no less valid than any of mine. I buy knives for no other reason than cuz I like 'em, so why not?

Besides, he's totally right - MGS3 is an awesome game.

The tiger striped blades are more prone to rust. The bead blast portion of the blade can rust if you don't take care of it, even with a fairly stainless steel like S30V. I'd go with black coating.
Take a look at the SLCC.

This is seriously confusing... Is there an actually difference between the tiger stripe and black coating in terms of rust proofing?

Coating on a stainless steel is pretty much a mute point anyways. Personally I think the tiger stripe looks a little more interesting. Good conversation piece but my oh my over priced!

Rust? Rust? What's that? If the knife is a talisman, hug it while you play the game, it won't rust. If you get out in the world and make a user out of it, just wipe it down afterwards and oil it once in a while.

If you do use it, you may get tired of dirty paracord. So it's easy enough to make scales or pay someone here to make scales for it.

Personally, I like that model. Take it out in the woods, you can use it for bushcraft. You can use it for almost anything, it's tough enough to outlast most folders.

Sweet, I'm glad I came here. You guys really know your stuff. I had 2 more questions.

1. I've had a hell of a time finding a nice sheath for this bad boy, where's a good place to start? I'd really love to get a sideways quick draw sheath that I can wear on a belt.

and

2. What oil should I use on the blade and how often should I use it?

The bead blast part of the tiger stripe which is the grey parts are more susceptible to rust. Bead blasting opens the pores of the steel.

Any oil. I keep pharmaceutical grade mineral oil on my kitchen counter, for high carbon kitchen knives. Works fine on blades and even handles and is edible (it won't poison you). Pharmacies actually sell it as a mild laxative.

Yeah if the fascination runs deep to have the game correct blade, then get that one. Ignore the haters, it's your purchase and you have to love it. Easy. I've got a strider and it's the ducks nuts, get one you wont be disappointed.

I got one, I was disappointed.

I got one, I was disappointed.

the ratio of people loving strider is higher than those who don't. Plus judging the OP's love for the game and the knife, I reckon the knife would have to be a complete dud not to make him happy. And just for the record I directed my comments when I said 'you' to the OP, not to 'you' Zimskee, any ways shame you didn't love yours, each to their own.

From the link you posted, it sounds like the knife comes with a sheath (or it's optional). Otherwise, there are a lot of custom sheath makers on this forum that could make whatever you want.

Hello everyone, you guys have a great community here. I've decided to buy my first real blade. I currently own a D2 steel KA-BAR and I love it but I love this STRIDER knife even more...

The Strider HT-S is THE knife I am obsessed with. This is because of my obsession with the Metal Gear Solid series. MGS3 is my favorite in the series and Snake, the main character's CQC (close quarter combat) knife was inspired by the HT-S. My obesession of an obsession.

My question is this, I have the option of getting this knife as is with the tiger stripe finish or getting it without (all black) directly through the awesome people of Strider Knives. What are the pros and cons of each and which would you pick?? I look forward to your helpful replies and being a member of the bladeforums community.

Once you go Black. You'll never go Back :D

I would opt for a Strider with a g10 handle.

...and black is way cooler

Reminds me of the United Cutlery Rambo knives many of us played with after seeing the movie. Not really the best knife to actually use, but hey, we were RAMBO dammit and it was fun!

If it makes you happy, get what you like.

 I remember those days of the rambo knife, Good memories and honestly who didn't feel like Rambo when they had that knife in hand??? One another note get whatever coating you want and buy some marine tuff glide or regular tuff glide IMO it's the best rust prevention "lube" I have ever used I live in Alabama and everything will rust down here, but I just keep tuff glide on my blades and no more rust! BTW welcome to Bladeforums.

Welcome to the forums!

As some others have said, if it we're me (which it ain't) I'd get the one with the G10 handle if I planned on using the knife. I do understand that the paracord wrapped one is more like the knife in the game and if that's what you're looking for then go for it. That size fixed blade reminds me a bit of my ZT 0121 and once I inverted the Kydex sheath so that it didn't ride so high on the waist the knife became a Hell of a user. I now use it harder than I would any of my folders including my SMF's. Point being, IF you decide to actually use the knife I think that you'll find it very handy.

The webpage says that the Strider comes with a Kydex sheath with a Tek-Lok, you should be good to go. I would go with the black blade but just go with your gut and I'm sure you'll be happy.

I'm surprised that you're getting any grief here regarding rational for buying that knife...I've got news for ya, MOST would say that we're ALL nuts, with far too many knives! Not to mention how much we're willing to spend on yet another knife...
(luckily there's no such thing as too many knives and the worth what ever you're willing to pay) :D

Mineral oil was mentioned to protect the blade from rust which works great and is safe around food. I've always had great luck with A.G. Russell's RustFree, a tiny bottle with last you years...one drop per side will cover the blade.

Best of luck on your decision! Take some time to get out and USE that knife and just maybe you'll find yourself with yet another hobby that'll help drain your wallet. <grin>
