Help with my first knife...?

So I'm building my first knife and I'm not really that far but I've encountered a few problems. First of all, I'm not really sure if I was supposed to drill the holes in the handle before heat treating it. I thought I read somewhere that that's not a good idea. Second of all, I have no idea if cutting it out like this with a jigsaw is going to create problems later on. Third, I don't really know what to do once I get it cut out, like making an edge wise. It's 1084 steel and I really don't know what to do about heat treatment, either.

You seem to need to spend some time reading the "stickey" threads on top of this forum for a bit of know how before you start. Holes MUST be drilled sometime before heat treat. Design, cut out and profile to shape, grind blade, heat treat, regrind HT scales to finish, cut apply wood for handle, sand and shape handle, sharpen, then go cut something. You have to read to get some idea of what is goin on. Best of luck

Also, fill out your profile with city/state or country. There may be a knife maker nearby willing to help you out. If you live near me I will say come on down to my shop and we can get that thing goin.

Finish profiling it and I will walk you through putting the bevels on. Once your ready for heat treat I'll do that for you. What tools do you have access to?

Thanks spareparts, when I first started making knives I was amazed at how open and helpful other makers were and I vowed to share knowledge and help others as much as possible. In return I have made some friends in the process.
