EDIT: In pics of the one brick forge I see they show a BernzOmatic torch with a hose. I have a BernzOmatic tip that just attach's to the propane tank and was thinking of making a fixture that would give the torch the correct angle to the opening in the brick. Anyone know if there is anything different about the tip on the hose model?

Today I went to Thomson's building materials looking for firebricks to build my one brick forge.

They had firebricks but not of a type that I would be able to carve out for use as a forge. The only fire bricks they had were about 8 1/2" X 2 1/2" but are very high density and weigh about 6 or 7 pounds.

These bricks are very hard and I tried to use the pointed end of a bottle opener on it but all I could do was scratch the surface, no way would this brick work. Thomson's is a very large building supply yard and has about 30 different types of brick but nothing that would be useful for making the one brick forge.

Maybe the correct type of fire brick is not used in Southern California? Maybe I will have to order from another area and have shipped?

I can see it now, .98 cent brick and 10.00 shipping!

If you don't want to order online, look in the yellow pages for stores that sell ceramics/pottery stuff. I found one pretty local to me that sells the soft refractory brick and kaowool. Somewhere in the expanse that is So. California, someone has to be selling soft firebrick. Good luck.

Stefanj,

Ya, alot of people here in So Cal, Way to many!! What city do they live in?

M.Griffin,
I looked in local phone book and noting like in say 20 miles from my home so will order online. Thanks for the suggestion.

Call the places in your area that sell or build fire places. If they don't have on hand they will give you a lead.
Sam Marcos The Warm Hearth store has Fire bricks and refractory cement, and a friend in 29 palms told me he got soft bricks locally. Your about half way between us. Thats still 75 miles, so with todays gas prices mite be worth a brick in the mail.
