I need advice for my project. I would like to buy a lightly used, in very good condition, well built, budget knife, in a canoe pattern. I plan to have this rehandled with some fat deer stag.

...Consider this a poor man's custom build...

Criteria:
1. Canoe pattern

2. Well made and reputable knife - think Camillus, Boker, old Case, Schrade USA, Solingen things, etc.

3. Carbon steel blades

4. <$50 on Ebay or second-hand somewhere. $$ Maybe a little over budget for the right knife.

Questions:
1. Which knife would be suitable for this endeavor?

2. Who would you recommend for the rehandle? FYI - I'm in Southern CA

3. Am I crazy?

Not crazy, but thats a tall order. A good Canoe from a quality maker in carbon is a fairly pricey knife. I think you'll be looking at close to 3 times your budget for one, but some do pop up on occasion with broken handles, and you may luck out. Last month I sold a German bull dog canoe with stag handles in like new condition, and it brought $170 at auction.

For that price, look at Rough Ryder or the Buck Chinese line, if they still make them. They will be new.

Try a Rough Ryder. They make a couple carbon steel models. Here is one example. They make a couple other models that you may be interested in. Try Am@$0^. image.jpg
