Help with sander problem

I just bought a HF 1" x 30" to use for sharpening. When I got it, I tested it out, and immediately changed the belt. I've tried several different belts, including the original, and I can't get the darn thing to track properly.:grumpy:

I've tried the full range of positions on the tracking adjustment knob, but every time I start it up, the belt tracks to the left off the top pulley. It's bad enough that it runs into the spark shield within 1-2 seconds and then stops completely.

This is my first belt sander, and my knowledge of things mechanical is fairly limited, so any suggestions would be appreciated.

If you got the $39.99 sander, then I got the same one. I have not had this problem, so you may have gotten a bad one. Did you try turning the tracking/tightening knob all the way to the left? If you did, and it didn't work, I would take it back and exchange it. HF has a good return/exchange policy.

I had the same problem, I took apart the tracking adjustment wheel assembly, clean lub and put back and you will see a big differnce. The one I had was so full of grease that I did not know the wheel was spring mounted. Now I can actually adjust the tracking and it keeps a better tension on the belt.

I guess I'll try cleaning the tracking wheel, and if that doesn't work, I'll return it. Thanks for the suggestions.

When I first got mine, the tracking had to be adjusted a ton. I had to go completely tightened, and then loosen it until it is about right. Watch out if you get a bad belt, it can cut into the plastic guard.
