Hi all,

I've had a bug lately to make some small "gadget" type neck knives. I need some help finishing them properly:

Is there a tool/bit that chamfers the edges of a lanyard hole? I've seen it done, and I tried duplicating with my drill press, but it's not very smooth.

Also, I'm wondering what method people use to scallop handle scales?

thanks!

if you are having problems getting a clean edge chamfering, try using a pointy dremel stone after you chamfer with a countersink, drillbit, or whatever you are using to chamfer. Or use a handheld countersink.

Are you just trying to countersink with a drill bit? If so, go get a proper countersink and use that. Run it SLOW and lube it well and you should have no issues.

Hey Tito,
I have a set of different sized countersinks from McMaster Carr that I use for chamfering all my holes prior to heat treat. I sculpt/scallop my grips by hand with a dremel tool and the coarse (or coarse then fine) 1/2" sanding bands on a rubber mandrel. I get them at Home Depot.

Hope that helps.

Thanks all for the advice - I'll look around for some countersinks. I'll have to practice with my dremel. I tried that yesterday, but with mixed results. My dremel has a tendency to skip off the material, leaving less than sharp lines.

use a FIRM grip, and go slow. I hate the dreaded dremel skip. like when you are cutting steel over your head (dont ask) and it skips right out of your hand and you are on a stepstool. That sucks.
