Hello, I am new to the forum and have had a question that no one seems to be able to answer. What determines whether or not what cosmetic modifications are taken in by warranty at KAI? Is anodizing okay? Is polishing titanium okay? These are NON-MECHANIC changing mods that are PURLY COSMETIC and don't affect the performance of the knife.

That is a picture

If what you have done did not cause the problem you are wanting to have warranty examine, you shouldn't have any problems. They probably won't say that outright but they will know if what you did caused the issue or if it would have happened anyways.

Is there a problem or are you just curious if you still have a warranty should the need arise?

Thanks for responding! There is a problem because before I did the "mod' there was bad blade centering, and I've had enough of it so I want to ship it back (for the third time) to see if they can fix it. My actions did not cause it to happen. Like said earlier, the problem existed before I polished the Ti. (I know I sound defendant haha but it's the truth!)

did you take it apart and adjust to see if centering would be able to be fixed?

Process like that can change the surface hardness of a material and that would be a definite issue if a warranty came up.

While I am sure your modifications did not cause the centering issue I also think if you have sent it in twice, I would not send it a third time. Blade centering is not a warranty issue as I don't think any knife company guarantees or considers blade centering a warranty problem unless it is hitting one of the sides, could damage the blade or cause the knife to fail. I know that is not something all of us knife nuts want to hear.

If you or they can't fix it send it my way I believe I can fix you up and get it centered.

It should be an issue on $200 knives. Seriously. There's only so many things on a folder that displays the maker's QC and F&F. It's not a Shuttle engine or a supercomputer...It's 4-5 parts that really should fit in together properly. Even gas station knives tend to be centered.

I've sent in uncentered blades to Benchmade (710, Grip), Buck (Vantage) and Spyderco (Caly 3.5) for warranty and they all made it right. Spyderco actually replaced the Caly 3.5 with a brand new one since it is a pinned knife. These three most definitely considers this a warranty issue. A brand wouldn't send me a brand new replacement if it wasn't.

I know from being around the forums awhile that CRK and many others would cover uncentered blades under warranty. Imagine a customer getting warranty service turned down by CRK due to centering LMAO yea right. Almost positive that ZT would also, but that seems to be your favorite brand, maybe you know more than I do with their policies, mind asking them for us?

@razor-edge-knives hey! I'd be interested, but I'm really new to the forums and have no idea how to check legimacy or ship/pay.

Agree.

If the blade is not centered, assuming all parts of the knife are put together properly, then some part(s) is/are manufactured out of spec, meaning there was a QC issue. Of course, we are talking about obvious off centering like 40/60, not sth like 48/52 (which I think is acceptable even for a $200+ folder).

I stand very corrected. Blade centering is covered under warranty! I should have clarified that I did not think something slightly off center, not way off center, would not be covered. Regardless I was wrong. Sorry!

ZT tends to bend over backwards to make its customers happy. Are you saying that you've sent it them twice for the centering issue and it's come back unchanged?

I would assume you would polish and anodize a knife you are proud and happy with. Why mod the knife after sending it in twice without the problem getting solved, all while knowing you are still not happy with the product? I would say at this point ZT is off the hook if they choose since you modified the product after warranty service was done, which says to ZT that you are a satisfied customer. They will probably still take care of you....3rd times a charm
