Help with with Spyderco

Was not aware of the Spydie drop. Just gave it a try. Pretty interesting, and seems obvious now that you told me about it. Mine is so stuff it doesn't want to open all the way. Could just be I need more practice, or may have to loosen or lube it. Will work on it.

Overdue update... still haven't found one but have very limited time. Work, three teenagers, tons of house projects - life getting in the way. I decided to carry the Dragonfly I bought to see how I could live with it. A very short review after carrying it for ~3 weeks:

Size/carry: Very small, which is nice for carrying in the office. It somehow carries larger than I expect it to. Not huge, but it's in the way sometimes when I go to do pocket stuff.
Grip/handle: Not great for me. I can use it, but don't enjoy it. Too small an uncomfortable.
Clip: Good. I loosened mine just slightly - now easier to get in and out. I mean JUST slightly. On thinner pants material it would have been fine.
Deployment: Just terrible for me. Could be my lack of experience with the Spidie hole, but it's just a pain to get open. Cut myself once with it trying to open one handed. Combo of stiffness opening, my inexperience, and maybe small size? 100% my fault, but just too hard to get open. I do an internal groan every time I have to open it. Compared to other small knives that easily and consistently open and lock up, this thing isn't even close for me.
Usability: It's an odd, awkward size for me. I somehow managed to stab my non-carry hand while I was cutting an apple. Also 100% my fault, but this has never happened before. Something about this just doesn't work as a regular pocket knife. It somehow requires much more care than something even 1/2 larger. Kind of odd.
Lock: Excellent. I prefer a lock I can close one handed, but have to admit this one is excellent - rock solid and very secure.
Blade/steel/grind: Fantastic. This is a ridiculously slicey blade. It just loves cutting stuff. I get why people like these blades. Takes and holds an edge incredibly well.

Size/Carry: Try taking the clip off and just drop it in your pocket?

Deployment: Stick the tip of your thumbnail/thumb in the hole and give it a solid flick.

Other options: Chaparral; Benchmade Mini Grip 555HG or 555-1 (Not Spyderco but uses the Spydie Hole); Spydero Sage as mentioned above or a Native 5 LW.

G0t the drop figured out. Pretty slick way to open it. Not my preference for opening, but works well. No clip? Just a knife floating around in the bottom of my pocket banging into everything and getting in the way all the time? What am I, a barbarian?

Thanks to everyone for the other feedback.

Clip on the pocket is the way to go :D

Glad the drop helps, I went a few years before learning about it. Seems to work especially well with smaller knives, more of a cool factor for the larger ones IMO.

The DFII is growing on me. Handle is still too small to EDC for me regularly, but the blade is excellent and very compelling. Happy withe the lockback as well.

Narrowed down to about half a dozen options and have two on the way: Raffir Noble Chaparral and a Native 5 with Maxamet. The Raffir Noble looks very unique - I'm either going to love it or hate it but had to check it out. Also wanted to try a Maxamet blade. If I keep it I'll need to get a deep carry clip.

Depending on how these workout the Sage, Delica 4, Caly 3, Mantra, and Manix 2 are on deck. Maybe a couple of others as well.

If ergonomics is the goal, there is no better knife than the Manix 2. It's definitely the most comfortable knife I own. If I had to complain I'd say I wish it was a wee bit smaller(that's what the Domino is for), but I'm completely content with it the way it is. The CBBL is pretty sweet too, like a heavy duty Axis lock. Lots and lots of fans for the Manix. I'd choose it over a PM2 9 out of 10 times.

I have no doubt the PM is great. Just a little larger than I want to EDC to work. Could be a weekend knife for me.

I love the manix but even it is small in my hands.
Sometimes you just don't like a knife, even if it's a good one. Nothing wrong with that

The question is, what are you looking for in a knife? The action, blade geometry, ergos, size, fidgeting, function, steel types, handle materials etc?

If I was looking right now this would be high on the list.

Good question. I've answered some of that earlier in the discussion. In this case I'm really looking for a Spydie that works for me. I have several knives I like and that serve different purposes (work carry, weekend, in the car, in the garage, etc.). Fidgeting is very low. Feeling "right" is very high. Has to have a good blade that I like using. Has to have a handle that works for me. Depending on the knife it would be mostly office duty for a very thin blade (food, small tasks) or more outdoors if a heaver blade (wood, general purpose cutting, garage stuff, etc.)

EDIT: also looking for something different, that I haven't tried before while I'm at it. Looking for something unique while I'm at it, as demonstrated by the two that I ordered (one with a very unique handle material, one with steel I haven't tried previously).

If I was looking right now this would be high on the list.
Caly 3 is on my short list. That sprint run knife is well priced. (Pretty sure that's the sprint Caly 3 - correct me if not.)

Yes the HAP40 sprint.

I have a Wolfspyder knife.
Its a scandi in S30v steel and a locker. 3inch blade , and is my EDC. Available in UK only . A different knife to the PM3.
Check it out on the internet.

One more update: I'm continuing to carry the DF II a few days each week. Handle is still very small for me. Usable, but a little toy-ike. I disassembled, cleaned, and relubed mine. Much better deployment and closing now. Closing one-handed not an issue at all now - as much due to experience as a smoother blade since cleaning.

A little small to use regularly for me. Excepting that, an incredibly useful knife for the size. Took me a while (maybe too long) to get it, but I now see why people rave about this knife.
