I got all of the great feedback I expected on the choice of blade patterns for a new boot knife.

NOW

I need help naming a knife I began work on several years ago. We worked with Dan Marangi on the American made steel and the heat-treat. Then Phil and I did the development of the omni-directional grip for the handle and an American made sheath. We then worked with the coating people to get the CCN coating that would protect the high carbon steel from everything.

Blade: 7-3/4" to guard, 8" to handle, 3/16" thick and 2-1/8" at widest point.
Steel: US made DM1 (developed by Dan Maragni) Heat-treat also developed by Dan Maragni for toughness and edge holding.
Handle: CNC machined green Rucarta™ to provide positive grip both forward and backward.
Coating: Chromium Carbo Nitride, I am told, over 90 Rockwell, hardest to wear that I could afford.
Sheath: Made in the US of American made Ballistic Nylon with Kydex® liner. The pouch will hold a standard clip for the service pistol.

We have used every bit of modern technology possible in order to keep the cost as reasonable as we could.

From the beggining I have called this knife The Bagdad Bowie. Now that we are no longer in Iraq, everybody else here wants to change the name. I want to run three names by you and for you to tell me which of them you think would most help to sell the knife. If you have another suggestion, I would like to hear that as well.

#1. Bagdad Bowie

#2. The Patriot Bowie

#3. DOA Bowie

Thanks in advance for your help.

Let me know when they are available....

#1.

Patriot gets attached to too many things nowadays. It's beginning to sound like lame talk radio speak. Save applying the term Patriot to people, not things.

How about the Solution Bowie? To me it doesn't look there is anything this knife can't do!

The Armed Forces Bowie

And in the Description something to the effect that the design is dedicated to our Men and Women in the Armed Services.

I thought about this too, but in all my time in including the sand box Ive never seen someone carrying a bowie...

It would seem odd to dedicate a pattern knife to a group that rarely, if ever, carries the pattern.

I'm not sold on any of the 3 names offered; though I think I like Baghdad Bowie the best.

Appalachian Toothpick??

I think the knife is sweet no matter which name you choose.

A.G.,

That blade shape has a cutlass feel to it. It belongs in a sailor’s mouth while he boards an enemy ship.

The most famous sailor to live in Bagdad—in the days of Harun al-Rashid—was named Sindbad.

Call it the Sindbad Bowie.

All three of those names are pretty cheesy. I recommend calling it something simple, like The Service Bowie, or something along those lines. I really like the design.

First, I'm a huge fan of AG Russell knives. I lived in Rogers for 2 years and met a lot of awesome people at the show in 2010.

My opinions about this knife design, with the stats posted I don't know how many serviceman will carry it though I don't think they could go wrong with it.
I'd call it "The Private", because this knife looks like it could provide the ultimate service and sacrifice to anyone carrying it, and quite often that's what Private's are called upon to do.
If you want to market this to the military, I'd go with a tag line something like:
"The Private - Serving you in everything you do and always there to make the ultimate sacrifice. Proudly made in the USA from American materials."

Push the buttons, but don't push them too hard.
And yes, I too would love to know when this becomes available! I wonder if it'll be in my standard AG Russell newsletter?
