So I'm getting unpacked since getting to Puerto Rico and really start looking at my blades for the first time to oil them up and see this on my Gladius. It has been in the sheath.

Surface rust? I know it's more humid here. I'm working on scrubbing it down now with oil.

Any suggestions?

Better shot. The others aren't like this and this one wasn't when I first pulled it out of the bag a few days ago. Then today, bam

How close to the salt water are you? If a rag does not work you may want to lightly try some extra fine steel wool.

Ok. I have some EDCi in my household goods that should be unloaded today. Just strange how quick this appeared. Maybe all the salt in the air since I'm right by the ocean

Yes. Don't store in sheaths. Just a few degrees difference between the knives and ambient temps may be enough for condensation in high humidity. In a sheath, the moisture may not evaporate. Oil them all. The Gladius may need a trip to Wauseon if you want to keep it mint/unused. Or, metal polish (Flitz, Mothers mag & aluminum polish), but to keep the satin finish even, you may have to do the whole blade, as metal polishes will cause shiny spots.

Thanks. Didn't think about that as they were all packed, figured they would be ok. Headed to the store now to see what I can find

Ya gotta remember that INFI is not actually a "stainless" steel. It acts like one for the most part, so we forget occasionally. :) Don't worry, one way or another, it's fixable.

I guess being in Nebraska it was never a worry. Just didn't realize how the humidity difference here has such C an impact. Will def put them all in the safe when it gets unpacked so I can leave them unsheathed and with the humidity control inside

Nebraska does have its advantages, if no ocean can be considered an advantage.[emoji53] Even SR101 is rarely an issue here with a bare minimum of care. Good luck removing the discoloration. Post some photos when you're finished!

Until a month ago I lived a block from the beach, I couldn't be happier with the Busse coatings because my mirror polished Sr.-101 edges would patina In a day or two. My infi knives stayed reflective much longer. I have a lot of stainable tool steel knives and waxes were the only way to stop the intense humidity/salt air effects without constant maintenance.

Ego sum Chrysaora

I worked on it for about 45 mins before the movers arrived to unpack our stuff. Have gotten most of it off with the exception of a couple inches towards the tip. I'll work on the rest of it after they are done. I'll look for some better stuff to keep them coated

Based on the humidity information, I just went online to order some wax to put on them. I'll get some polish to finish taking the rust/patina off then the wax coating to keep them that way

How long was it in the Sheath for? A week or so is usually ok in a Kydex or even leather sheath if the leather is dry and the knife has been cleaned and oiled prior to storage-You do not need coating on Naked Infi-I used an ASH-1 Satin in Florida for two years and never experienced any rusting-However I ALWAYS clean and put a light coat of Mineral Oil on after use-Good habit to get into
