Can someone tell me what on earth this is on my blade?

Almost across the entire length of the edge between the edge and the coating is a dark black line.
Please see the photos:

It might be polishing compound where the coating was sharpened off. Just speculating.

They are getting better at making the Busse logo look legit, but unfortunately that's a clear sign to the trained eye its a fake. Damn I hate when they rip off you newer guys who are all enthusiastic about such a great company. There's a special place in hell for these low lifes.

I know it doesn't help much after you already shelled out a lot lot of money for what you thought was a real Busse blade, but I actually live in the same town where the authorities specialize in these cases with knives.......I would be willing to pay shipping to send it my way and I will turn it in and we will see if we can't locate the scum bags who made this and ripped you off.

Again........I hate it more than you know when I see this garbage ruin such a beautiful, innocent love for INFI.

Just decarb mate

The knives are coated then sharpened so if you imagine the grinder hitting that now edge and it just nicked the primary grind, removing that tiny bit of paint, leaving the decarb underneath.

Nothing to be worried about but if you want to get rid of it - use your knife batoning or knock the shoulders off the edge by sharpening

Cheers!

A technique some people use when sharpening a knife is to mark the edge with a Sharpie and then grind away until it is all gone. Helps show if they are grinding the correct angle. Not that I've seen this on a Busse knife before, but it's a possibility. Maybe see if it washes off?

To me it looks like material from sharpening process. I wouldn't be to worried about, I have some older Busse blades with similar. They've been sitting around and nothing on them has changed. Plus Busse combat has your back with their great customer service and warranty !!!! :-)

Thanks guys, both possibilities make sense.
I gave it a clean but it didnt come off. I was hoping it was sharpie haha.
But it must be the decarb.

It doesnt bother me to look at but ive read that the decarb is very prone to rust? Ill probably baton it off when i get a chance. But for now, will mineral oil suffice?

Mineral oil on the edge to stop rust? Good idea 👍.

Your blade is showing the early stages of INFItus hemmoragic fever...it is terminal, sorry. :(

I will forward the address in a PM you need to ship it to quarantine to contain the outbreak.

The last thing we need is for a pandemic of INFItus to hit our continent. It is impossible to overstate how important it is for you to send the affected blade to me post haste.

Yep, just the decarb layer exposed slightly. You see this more prominently with the lighter colored coatings when the decarb is heavier than usual.

ETA - One side of my BT6 had the heaviest, toughest decarb layer I've come across.

But I thought INFI doesn't rust! :D
Share full pix of that puppy! :pig:

Were you able to get it off? If so, how did you go about it?
Or did you just leave it and pay no attention to it?

I stripped that BT6, and have most of the decarb removed. Still need to finish it. Scotchbrite belts and sheets, but I need to order more belts.
