Ok so my boyfriend is a cop and he wants yet another knife but it has to be able to be worn on duty, in other words concealable. He gave me very specific detais but there are lots to choose from so I would appreciate any help or direction on EXACTLY what to buy. Men if you know of a knife that you would flip for let me know. Here are his specifics: consealable backup & utility, 4-6 inch blade, Bowie/Droppoint blade, 154 cm, 530V, VG10, 1095 carbon, or similar hardness, ergonomin, non-slip, single gurard, suitable for thumb capping and in a Kydex or thin leather sheath. Please help!

Welcome to BF. Given the reference to the sheath, I assume we're talking about a fixed blade knife. I have to admit that I don't know what "thumb capping" is, but aside from that your specifications leave open a lot of possibilities. How much were you planning on spending?

The new spyderco perrin street beat comes to mind, though I don't think it meets the length criteria.

From New Graham:

Spyderco Street beat, Fred Perrin Design Fixed Blade. 3 3/8" VG-10 Blade, 3 5/8" Micarta handle. Large finger cutout of easy, exact placement and positive grip. Comes with a kydex sheath with TEK-LOK belt fastener that offers Small of back, crossdraw, inverted or vertical carry on waist or shoulder.
$149.93

If this is "supposedly" going to be worn while performing law enforcement functions, I sure wouldn't let anyone pick out a weapon for me. I would do it myself.

Cold Steel's "Braveheart" has a 4" blade, non-slip ergonomic grip, and Kydex IWB sheath for under $50 . . . no guard/hilt, though.

Price wasn't really an issue. But since you mention it, no more that $200-250. He's not necessarily using it for law enforcement. He just always has his knife so he wants to make sure he can still have it on him.

A Krein TK-8 Defender with flat G-10 scales in a Mercop harness would probably fit the bill really nice.

Here's what it looks like, but instead of rounded micarta scales, Tom can make flat G-10, even sharpen the top swedge if you want. Mercop is a member here who makes a really nice rig for concealed carry.

I second a vote for Tom Krein, if you want a fixed blade. But, does he want a folder or a fixed blade?

Did you ever notice when your boyfriend puts on his uniform his whole demeanor changes? Police have to get mentally up for the shift because they never know what will happen. It is part of what they do.

That said a belt knife in a sheath is cool, but a quick knife in a handy, mostly concealed position is what he needs. Something that can be deployed fast in an all or don't go home situation.

Here is what I would get him for duty:

BG-42 Military, Carbon Fiber and this to keep it sharp: Triangle Sharpmaker Kit

This is one of the best knives out there and my own kids carry them in combat every day. MV out!

Things you need to know:

Does he expect to ever have to pry with it? (blade thickness)

Does he want serrations?

If it were me, I would also want a knife that I could get a full grip on. (adequate handle length)

Does his department have any limits on "evil-appearing" knives? (Can it be a black, "tactical" appearing knife or would a more traditional apperance garner him less administrative static?)

In view of the multiple considerations, a gift certificate from a well-stiocked knife store might be the your best option. You might also find out if one of the reputable on-line knife dealers will make a gift certificate arrangement with you. If you go this route, go to the "Good, Bad, and Ugly" forum on this site and do a search for the dealer and see what is said about them. Or, just ask about them here.

A knife for him sounds like a thoughtful gift. Lots of guys on here would like to have a girlfriend like you. I've had one for about 35 years now.:D

If he is looking for pure weapons retention I suggest a Emerson Kerambit worn on his reaction side in reverse grip. If it is for straight utility then I would suggest an Al Mar SERE 2000 due to it's ultra low pocket ride made possible from a top mounted pocket clip. A lower cost alternative would be a Spyderco Endura and a trainer for same. I have yet to find a good way to be able to hide a traditional fixed blade in a patrol uniform except under the shirt. Best of both worlds is to carry at least two knives, one for people and one for things. They can do role reversal if the need arises. Another nice thing about the EKI Kerambit is that even in cold weather it is below the bottome of the jacket so as not to hinder the draw. And thanks to everyone on the kind words about the mercharness. Another nice addition to the patrolman's bag of tricks is a multi tool and an Atwood Prybaby. They are great for taking tags off cars.

You might want to consider a $500 gift certificate with New Graham knives so he can pick his favorites.

Personally I'd suggest a Microtech MTX2 double action with carbon scales and titanium bolsters paired with a Leatherman Charge Ti. There is nothing your boyfriend couldn't get done with this combo.

Wish him a happy birthday from all of us!

Now I did it. Accidently left my first post on the Custom Knife Thread where it looks like just adds for dealers. Hope I won't be stabbed at sunrise.
Anyway I'll try it over here.

I bought a stag handle knife at the Sturgis Rally about 10 years ago. Beauty with an eagle head carved out on the handle and etched in the blade. Anyway the guy who made it was nicknamed "Cricket' that's how he signed it. Does anyone remember this guy or know anything about him.
