Hey all, I am new to spyderco -- i got my manix last year (can't explain my love of this knife). I just use it for general random here and there tasks, but it is pretty dull now, even two small chips in the edge. Edge in some areas is slightly rolled as well.
I want to sharpen it -- should I order the stones on the spyderco website? Do I need all three grades? I want "hair-popping" sharpness.
Thanks!

I use mine for sharpening my knifes. and some sandpaper to round iut out beforehand

Sounds like your edge is pretty far gone. I'd send it to Spyderco for sharpening. In the mean time, get yourself a Tri-Angle Sharpmaker to use in maintaining the edge once your baby's back from Golden.

ok I have one of those (hitachi hand-grinder). But what grade disc do you use? and do you finish it with a fine grit stone or something?
Thanks!

I guess you can say it is far gone. but the chips are very small and the rolled edge is really hard to see. Anyhow, it is dull but it didn't get there with tons of abuse. Like I said I have only used it to cut plastic ties, open bags, cut rope, vinyl flashing, stuff like that.
so my questions are:
1. how long would spyderco keep my knife (I don't have a suitable back up! :( )
2. If it gets dull this often, I don't want to have to keep sending it in. What do you do mnblade, to sharpen a spydie that's in this condition?

Thanks!

A lot depends on your skill level at sharpening. I personally use DMT diamond hones (either bench or Diafold portable) for most of my sharpening, but I have been freehand sharpening for forty years. If you are a complete novice, I would suggest buying the Spyderco 204 Sharpmaker and watching the included video a few times before you tackle your Manix. The bench stones Spyderco puts out are great, high quality stones, but without considerable talent (or in my case, a LOT of experience) you can do more harm than good using them. If you are already good at sharpening freehand, those stones will help you put a wickedly sharp edge on.

if you got "the magic touch" you'll be sharpening that thing on a $5 Walmart stone hair-popping sharp.

if not, send it to Spyderco for a resharpening job ($5, if i'm correct.......)

i think he was pulling your leg , what idiot uses an angle grinder to sharpen?

I use one to sharpen...

my lawnmower blade (I'm too lazy to pull it off and use a bench grinder):D

Just get a sharpmaker. With a little patience and dedication, you can get those nicks out of your blade and get it back to shaving sharp.

Hi Painless,

To grind you blade on a grinder without a fair amount of experience will more than likely ruin your knife. the edge of a knife is very thin and getting it hotter than 400 degrees will probably ruin the heat treat. At that point, we cannot do anything to repair it.

I would suggest at least watching the Sharpmaker DVD. This will give you some ideas on sharpening. If the Sharpmaker is the tool you choose to use, it will serve you for many years on your Spyderco as well as sharpening other tools.

Uh, no.

Just plain no way. Send it back to spyderco, they'll fix it up for much cheaper than a sharpmaker will cost, while a sharpmaker is a good long term tool, it's easier to learn how to sharpen by doing touchups, rather than taking out chips on S30V.

Angle grinder? REALLY?
