I'm getting started on my first knife. I have 1075/80 from admiral steel, and am just doing a stock removal blade. I'm trying to drill out the profile of the blade to make it easier, but I'm having trouble with this. I've been able to get some clean, easy holes drilled with a heavy metal bit, but then I'm having trouble with other spots. Was the anneal on the steel done wrong? I have no idea if it is just me or what.

AFAIK, the 1075/1080 from admiral is HR, not annealed - at least the price list does not say it is annealed so hard spots should be expected.

You may have to use a carbide drill bit and drill with a rigid setup like a drill press and vise or you risk breaking your expensive carbide bit.

KK. Thanks for that little info. Will I have to do anything special before HT then?

You can always do a sub-critical annealing to even things up. Heat the steel to about 1200F, ( still magnetic) allow to cool slowly in the air. Re-heat to about 1200F and allow to cool until dark ( about 900F) and quench in water to finish cooling. The steel should drill and file better after that.

Thanks blade. Is this necessary to do this before HT though? Or could I just tough it out, work the blade, and then HT?

If you can file/grind/drill the steel pre-HT, then it is not neceaasry. If you can't, then you need to anneal it.
