Help

Welcome nbellowe, Welcome to Shoptalk. This is a very different section from anywhere else on Bladeforums. Here you will find some of the best bladesmiths giving advice to anyone asking serious questions about bladesmithing

First order of business, fill out your profile... Nobody will take you seriously if the only thing we know about you is when you joined and how many posts you have made, next READ THE STICKY THREADS, especially the ones in the "Newbies Good Info Here thread"
see link below, you will find a lot of the questions people answer every three weeks on this forum addressed there, and you will be able to ask more informed questions which will be more likely to be answered with useful info

http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/showthread.php?t=452465

Reading Kevin's stickies on the different steels after you have read the good info stickies would be useful as well

You will get a lot of info here. Some is good, some is merely well intentioned. If something doesn't make sense, ask questions. Physics and metallurgy don't change just because you are working on a blade.

Most of all have fun, learn, and play nice.

I am making a knife in a simular way at the moment. Its a long proccess but well worth the time.
Heres what I am using for tools

  1. Sand paper, I have from 80 grit through to 600 grit right now and will need higher grits to get to my finished product
  2. An assortment of good files, the cheap ones wont last long enough to do the job
  3. A bench vise, or something to hold your work firmly
  4. A hacksaw
  5. A file jig that I designed and had a friend make up for me
  6. 5160 steel, it had the properties that I was looking for. Decide what you want your knife to do, and ask questions based on that the bladesmiths will piont you in the right direction
Some other things you will need are handle material, a way to attach it to the knife, and sheath material is always good for when to finish the knife.

Heres a link to my work in progress

That file jig is the best one I've seen yet! Is that some sort of hack saw handle? I'm very impressed with this!

Its a leather wrapped wooden handle, I was just going to buy a plane handle but my friend decides to make one on his own. The thing works like a dream
