Bk 2 vs 7 for general wood processing I have 15 love it but don't want to do heavy duty stuff with it
So 2 vs 7 ? I like the 1/4 in in 2 but the length of the 7

It would be batoning chopping and general wood processing knife plez don't say hatchet/axe/mall I already have all three

Thx for any and all help

I'd get a 7 or 9. Got two 7's rescently and LOVE THEM! Had one before and traded it, don't know wtf I was thinking there, maybe it's because many BKHEADS speak poorly of it. Its going to be my "take everywherw/can do everything" knife this summer. Would take a 7 over 2 anyday. The blade is just to short for me personally to be used alot for wood processing. And 2 is heavy and not a good slicer. Have had 3 of them, down to one clip point. Barely gets used. Still like it though, 7 is just a much better all around knife imo.

If 2 was 7+ inches, would prolly say that, and hope something like that gets made, someday.

9 is not that much bigger or heavier than 7. Would highly consider getting a 9 also. Once you start carrying it you'll realize it's not bad to tote around at all and can be used for EVERYTHING.

7 or 9 is what I'd go with out of what I have/have had. Can't really go wrong with any though.

If you want a 7, buy a 9.

This is one of those "6 in one, half dozen in the other" types of things. Except for one thing the 9 is almost like a 7 that grew another 2". I know it doesn't sound like it could be true, but it is.

Most that buy the 7 first agree that they should have went with the 9 first.

I'd throw my hat in the ring for the 9. If you're on a bit of a budget grab the 4 while you can. Or grab the 7 and grab the 4 anyway.

I guess I will be the only one who likes the BK-2. In my hands it chops better than the 7. I don't chop much with it. But I do cross cut baton with it which I feel is usually a safer and more efficient option. Plus, the BK-2 does not have a thumb ramp or a hand guard.

I feel that if you are batoning a log thicker than the BK-2's blade length, you either don't know what you are doing or have found a log that should wait to go on the fire.

How about the Ontario rd 7 I know it's not a Becker and in the Becker sub forum but how would it compare to a 7 or 9 0r a 2

I don't have any experience with the 7, but I do with the 2. There isn't anything I haven't been able to do with the 2. And it's just about impossible to break. There is a reason the design has been popular for decades and it is one of the most popular knives. But at the same time, you can't go wrong with any beckers. Get what you want most. That's usually the best idea.

No idea about the rd7, but my vote is for the BK2. I've owned one for 3 years and I use every excuse I can to try new things with it. If I had to choose one knife out of all the ones I own to take with me outdoors it would be the BK2.

They aren't as good. If they were Ethan Becker would have designed it!

:D
Sorry, I had to.
I don't have any experience with the model, but I would be willing to bet that most here would suggest a Becker due to the handles.

I think James Terrio has all of the above, and prefers his 9 to his rd7 due to the handle design. But please don't quote me on that.

Just a quick note on the RD 7. The handles look very square. In my opinion the Becker handles win hands down for comfort and security.

Don't own a 2 but I do have a 7, I love it. I wanted a 12 but didn't want to spend that much so I ended up with a 7 as a general purpose camp knife. I used it to split wood mostly but have used it to clear bamboo and whatnot from the backyard. I'm not gonna chop much, I'm not going to do a lot of deep woods camping. For my needs, the 7 is more than I need. Paired with a 16, I have all my bases covered.

The BK9 can do everything the 7 can do, and the 7 can do everything the 2 can do, but I don't think the 2 can do everything the 7 can do.

If you want to baton, the 2 is thicker so it's harder to pound into the end of a log but will split it faster, the high grinds on the 7 and 9 will go through the wood faster but sometimes take more effort to get all the way through due to not splitting the wood as much.

If you're chopping, the 7 is going to be much better than the 2 for reasons of length alone, and the 9 will be better than the 7 for the same reason.

I find I can do fine with easier with the 9 than with the 2 that I had, just due to the thickness of the blade.

I have all of the knives mentioned here (2, 7, 9, 12. Except the RD but that doesn't count) and I can say that I love all of them. Personally I gravitate towards the 12 as my bush knife. Reasoning? Not sure. I just love that blade. But I do have to highly agree with Dres on the batoning issue. Cross cut all the way. And if the log is too thick, bung it on the fire whole. But in the interest of James' original post and poll question, I'd say the 7 would be my choice. Little bit slicier and only marginally thinner, it's still a stout blade that will perform a lot of tasks. Either way though, you'll get a knife that will decidedly outperform any other brand knife in the same size..

I used to have a BK-7 but didn't like it so I moved it along. I also have a 2 but I feel that it is too short for the thickness. Now if it only had an 8" blade...............that would rock.

Anyway I voted for the 7 of the two offered. However, like knifejunkie suggested, the 12 would really be the answer for you, longer than the 2, but thinner - the perfect compromise. Sure, it's a few bucks more, but amortize that over the life of the knife - chicken feed.

However, the 4 beats them all, and the price is good, while they last.

I have all of the knives suggested here (2, 7, 9, 12 - not the RD7 but I do have an RTAK II...) and from the Becker stable I'll agree with the people proposing a 9 (instead of the 7). Since you already have a 15 and are looking for something to do wood processing with, I respectfully disagree with dresnor. The extra length of the 9 just gives you more room for a baton....still looking at the same size of wood, but the 9 will replace an axe in a pinch and has a lot of control for a knife of it's size. The long clip point of the 7 really doesn't gain much for wood processing vs. the 2, IMO. One knife? The 12, as BKNC concurs. The 9 weighs a scant 3/1000 oz. more than a 2, anyways....and lives up to it's moniker as a woods tool. Get a 2 or get a 9....that's my opinion. The 7, while it is still a pretty cool blade, just doesn't....trust me, for woods use coupled with your 15, my guess is you'll be happier with a 9 over the 2 or 7. If cash isn't a problem, the 12 is my choice for the "one knife" solution.....more usable than the 7, longer (and less poundage) than the 2....but that's me.

Seriously, get the 9. You can't not have a 9. That's how I got started on this whole thing in the first place. I have a LOT of Beckers, but the 9 was my first - and still a favorite. The 7? I modified the $#!+ out of mine.

So, 2 or 7? Get the 9. Or just chuck everything you're thinking about out the window and get a 4 before they're gone....
....actually, you can't go wrong with whatever you decide. There'll be more - it's almost a guarantee.

Damn just looked up rules in Georgia on knives http://www.knifeup.com/georgia-knife-laws/. I quote. .it is illegal to carry open or concealed, a knife that is larger than 5 inches without a permit.
For knives greater than 5 inches, you need a weapons permit.

I'm 14 yrs old so weapons permit ain't a choice dam. Do you think a cop would really get pissed because I had a 5.25 (bk2) in blade? How about the bk 7 ? Where I camp there ain't no cop in a 50 mile radius but if I got seen like getting in my car or something then I'm a felon right?

Jeremy

I have a Rat7. The stock handles are very boxy. The Becker handles are better. Mine has Kyrptoglow handles, so it doesn't count :P. It's also D2. I chop with my 9.
