The Machax is the knife you want.
"When you go outdoors, grab your BK4!"

For the sake of the pole, I chose the BK2.
I've never cared for the BK7. It seems like it would be a good all arounder, but I enjoy using other Beckers. Especially the Machax! The 7 is just kinda....bleh...

The 7 and the 3 are the only two of the current production I'm not interested in. I'd go with a 2 if I had to pick between a 2 and 7 but I'd prefer the 9 or 12 over either.

How about the Ontario rd 7 I know it's not a Becker and in the Becker sub forum but how would it compare to a 7 or 9 0r a 2

On the RD7:
1) the handle sucks...but it is easy to reshape with a half-round file
2) doesn't perform as well as the BK7, in my experience; though, with a little effort, it isn't a bad knife

Now, BK7 vs BK2
The 7 was my first Becker, and I liked it a lot. Over time, I became disenchanted with it...even calling it the awkward middle child (to big to play like the little knives; but still to small to hang out with the big ones). Then, one day, I picked it up again; and it was the same great knife that I always thought it was. The 7 is a compromise in some ways; but it is a good do-it-all knife.

For wood processing, BK4 or BK9.

And the BK4 is less likely to be id'ed a 'knife'. ;)

But, between the 2 and 7, a 2.

I have both the 2 and 7 and both work great but if pairing with a 15 I'd say go with the 7. The 15 covers all the small jobs so I'd go with the longer blade of the 7 as it gives you a few more options in terms of wood processing. The 2 will work fine but the added long of the 7 would suit your needs better.

I assume you mean bk 7?

Nope, I meant 9, 6, or 21. Yes, I realize they aren't on your list. But if you want to process wood, you should consider. You'll likely have a tough time finding the 6 though, and I tend to prefer it for lighter tasks too, despite its size and general handiness. So 9 or 21.

Yeah I didn't find a bk 6 when I searched for it so thought you meant 7

The bk 6 is a great knife. I have one and it is awesome but if the two you proposed I would take the 7. That being said if I could choose a pairing knife to the 15 and an axe I would go with the 9 or the 4. Better for wood processing. But you won't go wrong with the 7

I guess I will be the only one who likes the BK-2. In my hands it chops better than the 7. I don't chop much with it. But I do cross cut baton with it which I feel is usually a safer and more efficient option. Plus, the BK-2 does not have a thumb ramp or a hand guard.

I feel that if you are batoning a log thicker than the BK-2's blade length, you either don't know what you are doing or have found a log that should wait to go on the fire.

This. Very good point.

If you're already carrying your 15, go with the 7 or 9 - more versatility in that set than just the 2.

Hmm, well if you're limited to 5" you can:
1) modify the 2 drop the tip an come back 1/4"
2) modify the 10 (!) if you want less weight
3) get a BK-16 or 17 as a companion to your 15.

The 7 is a great all-around knife.
If you're only 14, how big are your hands? Do the big Becker handles fit you? The BK-2 is the fattest handle in the entire lineup.

Hell, I'm 53(!) and the BK-2 is too much girth for me. Tires me out for finer tasks. But then again, seems we have some big youngsters here on the forum - and I don't have real big hands, anyway.

As a 'youngster' nearing 25 this May, I also consider the 2 to be too thick handle-wise. I can use my BK9 all day, though, those extra 4 inches are hardly noticeable for fine work.

Well my hand size is about medium adult for gloves don't know if that means anything

Both the bk 15 and kabar short both have to small handles for me but my hands ain't big neither

The gerber big rock fits ok in my hand except it being to thin handle

I'll swear by the BK7...
But if your looking for mainly wood processing look at the 9 or the 4, their length alone would best the 2 or the 7 for that task. As an all arounder the 7 or the 2 would be great where as the 9 or the 4 may be too much for some folks. I have and love them all, each has their place. I carry the 7 most as a "do all" as it is light and wieldy and will take on any task, which for the most part are in the lighter range but would work in a pinch for heavier tasks no problem.

You can modify the 9...
Heres one of mine next to a 12. It chops just as well as a full 9 IMO. I rarely use the tip on my stock 9. This one def sees more work than my stock...

I missed the 5" limitation. Man, even limited on open carry. That's nuts. I guess I'd be carrying a hawk and a 15 also. The Ritter/Becker collaboration is another I'd be interested in within the BK7ish range.
