Hen And Rooster Stag pocketknife.

I swear there is only one manufacturer in Germany that makes knives.LOL.Some of the other Hens look like Bulldogs so they are decent quality.Not as good as the earlier Bertrams, but I think german cutlers can hold their own.Look at the trapper and sowbelly. they're nice.

maybe I've been spoiled by the old H&R's, but the newer ones I've seen and handled make me very sad for the demise of the mark.

I'd say at this point in time if you wanted a German folder, buy Boker. The others seem to be made someplace where they don't care as much about QA and traditon. I don't know who is making the Hen and Roosters these days, but the ain't but a very pale shadow of the Bertram knives. Very large shame.

I think the same thing happened to Bulldogs also. That's why I believe they are the same.Eye Brand is still making a decent knife also, at least their price reflects it.

Guess our Solingen knife companies have some of their lines made abroad? :rolleyes:
If you compare old Puma knives to the newer ones you can clearly see a loss of charme and quality. :grumpy:

One german brand I`ve only seen good quality knives is Diefenthal. :thumbup: Don`t own one to date but will get one soon! :D

the link you provide says it is the only H&R with deer stag. check SMKW, there are lots of deer stag H&R patterns. numerous ebay sellers of Rough Rider knives (China) state that they are "made in the same factory as Hen & Rooster knives". i have read that even Eye Brand is having some of their current production made in China. stampings of "solingen" or "Germany" or both, do not guarantee that the knife is actually made in Germany. roland

I think the 31.50 price are for dealers.

The two knives have different stock numbers and I was able to add the less expensive knife to a "shopping cart"

Regarding the H&R quality, they're hit or miss. They don't seem to made in China because ( as much as I hate to say this), the Chinese knives I own are actually made a little better.

Jackknife is correct, the older H&R's , even from the 80's are better.

I don't want to sound completely negative...the German brands still offer a lot of patterns in stag, for a reasonable price.

Wolfgang,
Could you give some more info or pix on the Diefenthal marque please?

Never heard of this one and as I'm in the EU too I'm interested, thanks:thumbup:

Böker still makes a decent knife and Henckels, until they stopped recently.

How about Hubertus??

checked the link in above post. why are prices so high ? don't know the Diefenthal, but a Buck 110 is 64 euros = about $95usd, or 3x the price in USA.
so are the German knives also more expensive to buy there than in USA ?

Roland, unfortunately it`s true! :mad:
Most prices are much higher in Germany than in USA. :grumpy: :D

What's the "D2000 steel" that Diefenthal uses? The info on one of the Diefenthal knives on Toolshop ("Diefenthal Hunting Folder - 3 Blades") says that it is "comparable with 440C". Has somebody used it already?

@Wolfgang: is yours also D2000?

@zeppos
As the one I ordered is my very 1st Diefenthal I`ve no experience with the steel quality yet.
But I`ve heard nothing but good things about it. Possibly modified D2 ? or something in the 440C range? I don`t know.
I may phone and ask Mr. or Mrs. Diefenthal about that. (It`s a very small "company" ;) where they do most of the work by hand, I was told. Phoned to Mrs. Diefenthal a while back when a UK-friend had some questions about spare parts.)

@navihawk
The older Weidmannsheil should be of decent quality. Don`t know about the actual knives, though.
Will ask my forums mates of german messerforum about that.

Interesting how things have changed. When I was in Germany in 1981-1983, I bought several Puma knives because they were a lot less expensive there. Maybe the tax structure has changed significantly since then.

I will vouch for the older Weidmannsheil knives, here is one from the mid 70's in yellow bone and the quality is impeccable. Jim Parker bought out the Weidmannsheil name in the 80's or 90's and now the same folks who make Bulldog make these knives. Not the same quality though in my opinion as the earlier knives.
