It has been eleven days now, and Alayna's hand is doing much better. Hopefully they will be able to remove the stitches this Friday

We went up to my partner Andrew's house yesterday, and she learned a new skill. She was a bit traumatized by her accident and the amount of blood involved. She has been a bit skittish about things and worried about me cutting myself while I am at work. So we wanted to "get her back on the horse" so to speak. So we did a few quick lessons with her on how even with the use of only one hand that one isn't as limited as they may think so we showed her how she could prep tinder and even start a fire one handed.

I'll preface this with the statement that am usually against the idea of using a knife as a fire steel striker in a survival situation, regardless of using the spine of the edge. It works fine on picnic outings and on the patio, but I have just seen it cause enough problems in the woods to be against the idea if there is another option. I keep a dedicated striker on my sheath, and those of my family, and our back up systems all have their own on-board strikers that aren't sharpened like knives or pointy. That said, in one hand techniques when someone has injured a hand, and needs a fire, is one of the exceptions for me.

We helped her prep her tinder, and set up her fire lay, and then showed her how she could prop the knife on a branch with the blade overhanging the tinder, hold it in place with her foot, and then throw sparks directly into her tinder bundle when she pulled the ferro rod across the knife edge. It took her a few tries, and I didn't get pics of the fire starting because she was so excited (after being stuck in a house and moping for ten days with 26 stitches in her hand) that she just left the knife there sticking in the fire as it started and so we had to talk about that and how to go about it in the future. She is still really excited that she did it, and so now she wants to do it again so she can share the pics with a friend who moved back to Germany a few years ago. So, one day after school, today is her first day back and I hope that goes well, we will go to some local woods and redo the scene for photos.

I missed that she sustained an injury and I hope she recovers quickly and fully. Definitely good to see you're getting her back on the horse quickly. I'll be totally honest, Alayna's woods skills surpass my own and it's great to see her right back at it.

Very happy to hear that Alayna is healing up nicely. Please give her our love Brian. My wife was mortified when I showed her the photos and keeps asking how Alayna is doing.

Wonderful news Brian. Thank you for the update.

She is becoming a very skilled little girl. I see her hosting a survival tv show someday. :)

Great to hear. Even better to see her still out there enjoying being with dad.

Good stuff. Adapt and overcome, it's great to see kid's learning from experience and parents facilitating the process. Though I hope there is quite a bit of time between the next set of stitches, you both look to be doing awesome.

Glad to hear Alayna's hand is doing better!:)

Me too, thanks Gus!!

It was crazy, she had just gone to our local playground to play like she has for the last two years. Then came back down the driveway a couple ours later crying and covered in blood. She nicked an artery and ended up with 25 stitches, 9 internal and 16 external. But I've been working with her for the last seven years teaching her and this year started training her to assist me in my work. She is a very brave and tough little girl. I am extremely proud of her.

Thank you Abe, we are too!! It was scary the night it happened. Please tell your wife she is doing very well.

Thank you Dave. I have toyed with the idea of training her and then producing a you tube channel later if she wants to do that sort of thing :)

Thank man. Yeah, I had been wanting to get back out at least for a short time as soon as I could, but I didn't want to rush it, and we were very careful to not put it under a lot of stress. It still has a ways to go before it is healed, but I wanted her to see how her limits are higher than she realizes.

Well done.

Thanks man.

Good to hear she's doing good and 'back on the horse'

Thanks man. She is a tough and brave little girl, but she was showing signs of trauma that worried me that needed to be alleviated. So she got to hang out with Andrew and myself working and saw that no-one got injured, and then got to start our camp fire for us so I think everything will be ok.

Thanks man. Yeah I hope it is a good while, and that if there is to be a next time there is less blood and less stitches!

It's a sad commentary on things that she has been home with us for 11 days. She has done some games, has drawn, and even went on a cookout with us and had no issues. Yesterday was her first day back at school, and my wife personally drove her, filled in the nurse in on the situation and the extent of the damage, and gave them instructions that Alayna was to be on no playground equipment, was to do no running, and was to keep the use of the left hand to a bare minimum. So they proceeded to just turn her loose on the playground and she chose to swing thinking that was the safest thing. The the PE teacher made her run in PE, because there wasn't a note. So today I wrote a note to her teacher explaining everything the extent of the damage and complaining about the fact that when information is given in person it should work as well as a note to keep things from happening until they got a note if required. And then I had to go pick her up today at 11:15 because her hand was bleeding, for the first time since they sewed it up, because her typing teacher had told her she had to type with two hands and she tore one of her stitches out typing. We had to get her doctor, who said herself that "one would think that sort of thing would be common sense with a ten year old with 25 stitches in her little hand., to fax over a list of doctors orders. I am about to send an email to the director of the school board expressing a lack of confidence in the school nurse and staff, and C.C. everyone involved....

very cool. i'll have to share this with my little one. glad she is doing better.

Mist, sorry to have to break it to you but there is plenty of grown adults who some how have survived to adulthood without the use of common sense. Yes even some nurses. Hope it all get resolved.

Great to hear she's doing better and tell her nice job on the fire start!

Thanks guys, and yeah I am not going to let idiots take away how proud I am of Alayna.

Thank you Nathan, and I will pass that on to her :)

That's great news Brian. Definitely looking better. I imagine it is still painful for Alayna doing certain things she has always taken for granted. I pray that the healing process continues to go well with no lasting complications for her.

Thanks Phil, she is definitely getting annoyed with the lack of mobility from the wrap, but considering she tore one of the stitches out typing yesterday, we need to keep it immobilized for a while longer. She really is a tough little girl though, she hasn't even wanted ibuprofen for the last three days, and started turning down the actual pain medicine on the fourth day in because she didn't like how it makes her feel.

Thanks man, yes, it is definitely doing very well so far

Great to see she's doing better. Its going to be fun removing those stitches. I always like doing that.
