Ben E Hana, noone's perfect and here's another one you can laugh at. If thy right eye offend thee, pluck it out. Well, I'm gonna pluck it right now!!

Whoa guys its getting kind of hot in here

I had no idea that knife designs went so far beyond appealing to one person and not really cathing anothers eye. Isn't that how most things that are opinion based work?

Anyhow back to the drawings. They look pretty good to me. They aren't really original, but whats wrong with a different twist on an older style of knife. Look how many bowie's are around. And being original isn't always better. Look at REKAT's pocket hobbit. YUCK, what the hell is that thing? Original yes, nice knife, not to me.
I like the idea of the spine swell on the one. It gives a good place to push your thumb against and helps secure your grip. Alot like the swell on the back of most spyderco folders. And I like the overall style of most of the designs. They look like they're meant to be good for general use and not to flashy. Keep up the good work.

First, Gunner, I'd also like to say that I admire the guts it took for you to post those designs. As to the designs themselves, I have bad eyes so I couldn't see the small pictures very well, but from what I could see they didn't look like bad knives. Certainly very practical and worthy of being made for some hard use. I'd say stick to it and see what happens. Best of luck in the future man!

NOW, as to some other A$$HOLES who replied to this, you should be ashamed! Good God, the man may not be overly tactful, but at least he put the designs in a thread, with no garauntee that people wouldn't ridicule them. Which, by the way wouldn't have been much of a concern six or nine months ago. Now, the idiots appear to be coming out of the woodwork! I'm not trying to say everyone here is an ass, but there are a whole lot more than there used to be. Or at least they're posting more. Some of you guys are acting like kindergarteners! The third reply to this thread was just some idiot who didn't even have a valid enough argument to make a point; all he had to resort to was senseless taunting. And you can call me on that however you would like, Phil, because that's my honest opinion! Come on people, can't you try to disagree with someone without being antagonistic? I'll admit that I'm not always a perfect gentleman, but this is ridiculous.

That was what I think about some of you jumping all over Gunner. As to the way some others of you jumped on Chiro, I don't see the point in that either. He didn't say that he thought they were great because he didn't think it was true, simple as that! Dammit, its getting late, I'll have to finish this later. ANYONE who has a problem with what I said and wants to tell me so; go ahead. At least try to include some points of argument instead of calling me a mean poopy-head please.

Just because I talk to myself does not make me crazy. Now, when I listen to myself, that makes me crazy.

That's enough guys. Especially some of you who've been around here longer and know better. Cut the ****.

Well yet another fledgling aspiring knife maker/designer squashed.

Constructive critism is one thing. Being downright mean is yet another.

My first knife was a rail road tie that I heated up, twisted to make a grooved handle and then I forged an edge and sharpened it. I have no idea where it is but you can bet your ass I will never show it here.

Now this forum seems to be taking on a new life and one I don't like. So maybe I should start stomping a few asses out of here.

Or maybe we can just realize WHY we are here? We all love knives, right?

I am not asking you to lie to people but you can say things in a different fashion. Also don't go make, yet another, apology post as most people are sick of those too

So let's get back to what makes this place so special and make people feel welcome, OK?

Whew. Heavy... The search thingee can be real handy in all the forums, not just this one. History has a way of repeating itself.
Okay, time for the emails.

I won't comment on Gunner's designs, but I would like to comment on what has been written here. I feel that this is a prime example of the "Keyboard Kommando" syndrome.
It's very easy to criticize from the safety of your keyboard. I doubt that many of you would say the same things face to face.

This is not an attack on anyone. It is simply an observation of the antics found on almost any forum.

Hey! Roadrunner. It's not crazy to talk to yourself. It's not crazy to listen to yourself. It's not even crazy to answer yourself. It is crazy when you do all these things and then say "huh?".

Actually Chiro and I e-mailed each other last night and we have come to an understanding, we'll meet half way and kick the crap outta each other like real civilized men that we are.:) Taking any and all bets (btw I have 14 years of martial arts under my belt) :)Seriously though, Chiro and I know where we stand and there were things said that are regretted, such as what I called him(un-necessary). Anyhoooo,

Considering that the designs are for TOPS, they fit right in with their style.

That said, I have never purchased a TOPS knife, as they don't appeal to me.

I am a little curious about putting the lanyard hole right behind the guard...

I would, of course, be interested in seeing what Gunner can do in other styles.

I'll side with Chiro - The designs were posted for review, and Chiro gave his honest opinion. I NEVER want this forum to become a warm, fuzzy love fest. If people have opinions, they should feel comfortable posting them - good, bad, or indifferent.

How is a designer to grow if the only feedback he gets is tepid, chummy praise?

Chiro commented on the designs, not on the individual, the fact that his comments were largely negative should not cause a problem, but it usually does. The same thing happened in responce to Marion's comments about the Strider WB.

If you don't want people discussing your posts in an open manner, which includes the negative as well as the positive, then just add "No negative comments - please" to the end of your posts.

As for the designs themselves, you definately want to change the format to make them more easily readable.

Anyway, if anyone would like to critique my stuff, then go ahead! The comment about there not being constructive criticism is totally false. By rule, any type of criticism will be a blow to your ego. I can't think of anything more destructive, however, than leading someone to believe that they have something better than it really is. I will concede that my methods may not have been the most tactful, and I apologize. Everyone has good and bad days when it comes to writing. Gunner aspires to be a knife reviewer and a designer. Both of these things are going to take a lot of hard work on his part. My reviews take me forever and a day, but if a few people read them then they are well worth it! Anyway, Gunner, apologies again if what i wanted to say didn't come through. Feel free to pick my sheaths apart with a fine-toothed comb if you'd like! If I didn't have thick skin i would've crawled under a rock a long time ago! Anyway...

I think Cliff is right on both on Chiro's post in particular and about criticism in general.

I realize there's a lot at play here, most of which I don't understand since I haven't been paying attention to intra-forum politics, BUT ... if it was Chiro's original post that caused a lot of this, I'm frankly confused. This can't all be about only getting positive feedback, right? Chiro's original response was not insulting, gave a frank and accurate opinion of the work at hand, gave good advice on how to pursue further. It's nice to get some encouragement in a string, but it's also important to get some non-insulting but frank criticism.

Ahahaha, got to love this place. This has got to be one of the best threads ever. It has everything in it.

Good Lord, I feel like I walked into a soap opera. Where did all these personal feuds come from? This used to be a pretty friendly place. Now, it seems like every time I log on there's a new "You can all just kiss my ass and go to hell" post.

It's already been said but it bears repeating: Gunner did the right thing to post his designs (I hope) and it was a brave thing, too. Y'know, I stopped posting at a poetry forum where they liked my poetry but they ripped a young girl's poems apart and resorted to personal insults, and this is the same thing. Think about it.
And jumping Chiro was just as pointless. He was very encouraging ("get a notebook and fill it up!" or something to that effect) and very honest. Let's have no more of this stuff, OK?

Oh, and if you must crucify Chiro, crucify him for being the jerk who caused the Scrolling Screen of Death on the first page! Aaaarrrggggghhhhh. That was just infuriating . . . . .

I like knife 6.

And no, I'm not gonna kiss your ass. It's bad enough I have to go to work all day

I'll bet its good for chapped lips though. Keeps ya from lickin' em.
