Here is the AK Bowie we were looking for. A winner!

Well, boys, they've done it. Yvsa sent the prototype of wood and the kamis duplicated it in steel about 98%.

This AK Bowie is 16 inches overall, 2.5 wide, and 7/16 thick. The knife is a hefty 2.25 pounds. They thinned down the tang some to get the balance they wanted but it is a tang that will never bend or break no matter what.

The fit and finish on this knife is excellent. The kamis did not slack off on hardness as they got to the tip -- they kept it pretty hard the full length of the blade. I'm guessing the edge is close to 60 as my old test file sort of ran across it without any drag whatseover. I personally rate the entire rig as excellent.

Since Yvsa was kind enough to do the prototype for us he gets first whack at this knife. If he doesn't want it by rights it should go to Cobalt but I don't know how to get it to him since he is in transit so I guess it would go to the next guy of the original sign up list over on the old knifeforums forum.

I am very proud to be offering this knife. It is a winner and I believe this AK Bowie will become part of the standard product line.

Sorry, no karda, chakma or frog. But please note the flag of Nepal in black leather at top of scabbard. Nice touch!

Sign up time, anybody?

Uncle Bill,

Holy crap, I think the sarkis out did themselves on this, and the knife is a knockout as well!

Yep, sign me up!!!! And, I PROMISE the review of the first one will be up this weekend. When's the delivery time going to be on these?

Take care,
John Johnson

That is a truly weird-looking knife. Some archeologist is going to dig one of them up thousands of years from now and proclaim it as the Missing Link that proves there was contact between Nepal and America in the twentieth century -- and the scientific world will look at that proof and say you're nuts, there can't be any such knife ... it must be a forgery, nobody could ever have made a knife like that ... there ain't no such mongrel hybrid knife ... there can't be ... it has to be a hoax, no one could possibly have made such a knife in the twentieth century....

Did I mention I like it?

When people say there's nothing new under the sun when it comes to knives, they haven't laid their eyes on this one! It looks like a completely different beast (and after testing the first version, it's definitely BEAST in capitol letters!
smile.gif
) then the first one did. Sometimes it takes the convergence of the new to meld with the old. Think Art Bell would wanna do an interview with this???
smile.gif
We could call it a relic from "Forbidden Archeology".

Uncle,
I don't come to you for straight knives but this one gets my attention. It looks like something that Neandertal man would appreciate. A very tough sharp pry-bar.

It's the kind of knife you can use to fend off a sabre-toothed tiger, field-dress a wooly mammoth, and still shave the hair off your back and shoulders at the end of the day.

Bill,
Ohhhhhh Yaaaaaah!!!!!
I just know I'm not gonna like this part, but how much we talking here?
Dan

Cliff,

Does this mean that we'll eventually see a review of the AK Bowie stacked against other bowies? I would say that it's almost in a class by itself..

Arvind

Yvsa gets this knife because without his prototype it would have taken me a year of hit and miss with the kamis to get us to this point.

They have done an incredible job here on both scabbard and knife. This knife is going to become part of the standard product line -- the HI AK Bowie. I was impressed with the success BirGorkha had with this blade and I am very pleased to offer it.

The price will be $225. I have given a go ahead to produce ten more just like this one.

I think Yvsa will have his usual honest and expert review of this knife for us very soon.

I was flipping through the book "A Glossary of the Construction, Decoration, and Use of Arms and Armor", (whew!) by George Cameron Stone (an overall EXCELLENT book that's been out of print for several years. If you can find one, GRAB it. The book was originally printed in 1934, and reissued in 1961. It's entertainment for many, many hours.). The blade shape of this AK Bowie reminded me of a blade that I had once seen. It's called a bhuj (or kutti), and was indigenous to the area of Northern India and Sind. Picture the exact same blade, although attached to a twenty inch long round handle, with a knob and usually an elephant on that knob, on the end of the handle. It was apparently called an "elephant knife", because of the elephant on the end of the handle. The book says it frequently had a smaller knife hidden in the handle. It's definitely pretty interesting looking, and looks to be more of a cross between an axe, and well, an AK Bowie with a stick stuck on it.

I guess it does go to show there's really nothing new in the design world of knives. BTW, the katars that are shown in here are phenomenol. I'll try to get the page scanned, although with the black and white photos that are in the book, the quality may be poor.

Take care,
John Johnson

Holy moly what a weird looking knife! This looks to me like the Nepalese equivalent of a tanto. My understanding is that tanto were frequently made by putting handles on the ends of broken swords. Imagine you bust the end off a full size khukuri, so you slap the bowie tip on it, reharden, and viola the AK bowie!
wink.gif
I know it isn't the same thing, but that's what first came to my mind, at least...

I have to say that I am Honored an very pleased!!
To have something come a part of H.I.'s regular line up is a Honor in itself!
Then to have Cliff like it enough to want one right now is a very special Honor to me!
Then for Cougar and the rest of the guys to like it is another Honor!

I feel like a well Honored Gourd Dancer who has been Honored by 150 other Gourd Dancers at $5.00 a piece! The usual fare is $1.00.

Then to actually get the very first one!

I will make an exceptional effort to go to my "sisters" place where there is 20 acres to knock around in that's wild with Wild Dogwood,Blackjack Oak ( that likes to suck sand up with it's water.)
Hickory,Wild Plum,Smooth Sumac, and countless other varieties of trees and brush.
It's cold (35*,to us.) here right now an very, very _wet_!
M "sis" lives where the old Oklahoma blue clay is abundant and when it is like it is now a person can walk 6 foot and gain a foot in height.Really!
The cold won't bother me,but the mud might.
I surely pray that it meets everyones expectations and Especially Cobalt's!
If it wasn't for him the concept may have not been thought of by now.

Since he did think of it I would like to chip in a tad on the price of it so that he could have a little "discount" on his if he likes this one.It would be my way of showing appreciation for his original concept even though the knife was designed by committee.

Thanks for the reception of the H.I.Cobalt Special AK Bowie Knife.
