I'm am looking into a new knife for hiking/outdoor EDC type of thing. I already have a CT for camp site duty and beating the tar out of. Problem is that I am only aware of a few knives that fit the bill for what I want:

Parameters:

Fixed Blade - fairly stout, but great cutter
Betwen 3.5 and 4.5 inches (blade)
Satin finish
Micarta Scales (or other good looking scales, but something nice)
Finger choil - don't know why I like 'em, but I do.
Large belly

This knife will see no super hard use (major chopping/prying) unless an emergency comes up. Mostly for general cutting duty, camp cooking duty perhaps marshmellow sticks type of stuff. I would like a good looking knife because quite honestly...I don't have one now and I don't want people to balk at it.

I have found three knives that fit the bill well so far and am sure that with your help I can research more:

Busse Anorexic Badger Attack (although choil might be too small)
Fehrman Peacemaker
SRKW Safari skinner (leaves me cold)
*edit* Dozier Drop Point hunter is very nice too, but no choil and a bit price inhibitive....
Any help would be great!

I'm looking into Bark River. I like what they are doing and have to get one...or two, maybe three.

The fixed resistor is quite nice. It is perhaps a bit too "tactical" looking, but a strog contender none the less. Don't know much about the steel, but I'm sure it is tough enough.

Bark River is interesting. Seem like a lot of value. I particularly like the north star which is due to be selling shortly...

Thanks guys. Any others? I still think the Peacemaker is top of the list...

I have been looking at the Arc Lite by Darrel Ralph.
www.darrelralph.com Select straight knives.

Wow. That is very attractive. I like the slight recurve blade. No finger choil, but the look of that knife more than makes up for it. Seems fairly customizable too. I wonder how much though. They all list at 275 base. Just what is "base"???

If you're willing to do a handle yourself, look at A.G.Russell's Camillus Arclite in D2.

I've got three Bark River's myself, the Rogue, the Highland, and the Micro-Canadian. Read this on Beating on the Highland. (The Northstar is a more expensive variant of the Highland.)

Just ordered the Bark River mini-Canadian...the moment I saw it I knew I had to have it. I am really in love with the Rogue, especiall since you can flip the coffin handle hand use the spine of the knife for some batoning.

How come nobody has mentioned either the Bog dog or Howlin' rat? Especially if the knife sees only medium duty they may be just as good as their Busse counterparts and a helluve lot cheaper.

OK, I'll mention them. I have them all, the HR, BD, and the DAB. By far, my favorite is the HR. The deeper belly on it compared to the other 2 and the BA III just makes it more useful for me. The Safari Skinner also leaves me cold. The Bog Dog is nice to be sure, but I still like the belly on the HR. Have you looked at an older BA-E? It is closest in shape to the HR if you want the toughness of INFI. A very nice design. The Badger Attacks in all their configurations are my favorite Busse's.

If you have a CT, a HR would make the perfect companion blade. If you are more interested in a BA-E or DAB, drop me an e-mail.

Great advice guys. Keep it coming. I like that highland a lot.

As for the Bog Dog and Howler - I have looked at them extensively. I would buy them if they met the satin/micarta requirements. I say micarta, but G-10 or some other good looker is fine. The bog dog and the HR are great blades with the wrong handle(not that I dislike resiprene-C, I just want to buy my first really attractive knife). Also I don't want the HR coating. I have emailed Eric directly about the idea of a tactical satin howler which would be perfect - like the skinner but with the howler blade. Like a good businessman, he would not commit to a time frame for a knife like that. So....

I'm going to keep looking...

Oh and I like the Badger too. I think only the anorexic one comes in satin though..no?

gene ingram will make you a custom knife with whatever handle you want

Nope, the DAB (Desert Anorexic Badger) comes in Desert tan and Micarta.

I think I said that in such a way that what I meant was confusing. What I meant was that the only satin Badger that I have seen was an anorexic badger attack. I have not seen the BA-E or the desert in satin. I'm thinking of picture BA21 under the badger attack link here:

Anyhow, that BA-E is simply gorgeous. I LOVE the profile of the blade. Looks very stout. How does she cut?

While I'm a big fan of Dozier knives, I am also fast becoming more and more inclined toward the Bark River knives too. For a general all around camping EDC user one of the small convex grinds of Mike Stewart could be small enough to carry and use for skinning and field dressing jobs but also have enough weight on the blade because of the grind to easily handle chopping jobs too. The prices of Mike's knives are certainly right.

Shucks. How 'bout a quick production knife.

The Buck 192br 'vanguard' would be a good choice. No real Choil, but a finger guard.... <$100 too. I've got one and it makes a great camp knife. Takes and keeps a razor edge too.

Cuts like a champ and IS very stout. I have 2 satin BA-E's. 1 from the shop, and the other by Russ Weiland, rehandled in red and black micarta ( oversized and smooth)and polished by him. That one is somewhere in the exchange, you can do a search for pics, or e/m me.
